Title: Marriage through prayer (Genesis 24:10-27)
Content Marriage through prayer (Genesis 24:10-27) - Rev. Jinwook Ryu
Text (Genesis 24:10-27)
10. Then the servant took ten camels from his master and left, and immediately he took all his master's good things and went to Mesopotamia and came to the city of Nahor. it was time to come out
As soon as I graduated from high school, I declared that I would get married and lived. However, it didn't go my way, and it took me 10 years to get married after I went to the military, graduated from graduate school, and got married. Today's text is a dramatic story that takes place when Eliezer, Abraham's slave, arrives at the city of Nahor to find a wife for Isaac. Through these words, I would like to share with you how families of faith should prepare for their children's marriage.
When Eliezer came to the city of Nahor, he first prayed to God as in verse 12. Also, as in verse 21, “The man kept an eye on him and wanted to know whether the Lord had really given him a smooth path,” he decided to focus on God. You can tell it was. These two words were a huge challenge to me while I was reading them in the school library in May 1993, and they came to me with great grace like being hit in the head with a hammer. At that time, I realized that people who are getting married should do this, and I vowed to make a proposal of faith like this in the future. In the bible that I will pass on to my children as heirlooms, I wrote the content of receiving grace in May 1993 and telling you to prepare for marriage like this.
It seems that all parents feel the same way. It is for your children to prosper, to find a good spouse, and to live well. Just as Abraham found a wife who could symbolize God's covenant by faith from his own race, and slaves completely focused on God to find a wife for Isaac. It is something that must be done and focused on complete faith. After this realization, my ideal of a mate completely changed. Before, I was tall, piano skills, long hair, athletic skills, etc., but now my wife does some sports, but she can't play the piano, and she has short hair. However, seeing what God is doing through these two families, I became convinced that this is the person God has prepared for me.
In immigrant families, we often see children marrying against their parents' wishes. However, remember that Abraham and Eliezer prepared for Isaac's marriage and prayed to God first and did it by faith, so I hope that you will become a family that prepares in front of God through prayer first. I hope that a consensus of faith between parents and children will be formed so that we can become a blessed family where we pray together.
As in today's text, I hope you live a life of prayer, starting with prayer, proceeding with prayer, and ending work with prayer. It is biblical to do this, and there will be no mistakes. The things that are done in this way will be things that you will not regret, even if there is a difference between the better and the worse of the work. Please pray for your children always. But pray that God's will will happen, not mine. That way there is no failure. Then, as in verse 27, the confession of faith will occur. It is what we need to entrust everything to God, the Lord of our children, and to live our lives in prayer.
Please pray gently to God. I met my wife and got married in three months, but I got a lot of grace while watching God lead the two families for three months. Lastly, if you have any desires that your parents have, put down all of them and, like Abraham and Eliezer in today's text, entrust all your children to God, and I bless you in the name of God to lead a life of prayer.
