Title: Meaning of the Mt. Byeonsan incident
Text / Luke 9:28-36, Matthew 17:1-13, Mark 9:2-13
1. Introduction /
The central message of the New Testament is that Jesus is the Christ. The Synoptic Gospels proclaim this fact three times during the most crucial period of Jesus' life. First, the public life of Jesus, when he was baptized by John the Baptist, through the Holy Spirit <You are my Beloved Son Mark 1:10-11>. Second, in the midst of Jesus' public life, God Himself on the Mount of Transfiguration <This is My Beloved Son Mark 9:7>. Third, at the end of Jesus' public life, when he died on the cross, through the mouth of a Roman centurion, <This man truly was the Son of God Mark 15:39>.
Today, I would like to share grace while meditating on the text of the Mount Transfiguration event, in which Jesus was declared the Christ.
2. The story of the Mt.
In the synoptic Gospels, the transfiguration event is linked to the famous confession of Peter, who said, <You are the Christ, the Son of the living God>, and to the intense controversy between Jesus and Peter, although it does not appear in the Gospel of Luke. The transfiguration event can be seen from the fact that it is specifically pointed out that the day is six days (Matthew and Mark) or eight days (Luke) after the confession of faith in Peter.
In the text, after Peter's confession of faith and a heated argument between Jesus and Peter, Jesus takes Peter and John James and goes up the mountain to pray. The disciples are all asleep, tired, and Jesus prays alone, looking at his future. As he prays, his appearance changes and his clothes shine. And suddenly, in glory, Moses and Elijah appear and have a conversation with Jesus.
The sleeping disciples wake up in amazement with the dazzling glory. After waking up, the disciples are overwhelmed by this amazing and amazing sight. The disciples did not know what to say. They say that they want to build three huts and live here.
However, what the disciples clearly saw and heard was the voice of God saying that <Jesus passed away in Jerusalem> and <This is my son, the chosen one, listen to me.>
3. Interpretation of the Mt. Metamorphosis Event
There can be various interpretations depending on the perspective from which you read the Mt. You can focus on the fact that you went to the mountain to pray, or that you went up the mountain with only Peter and John James, the key disciple, or that you were going to die, or that you came down from the mountain.
As an example, the historian Toynbee cites this metamorphic event in his great <A Study of History> when explaining the withdrawal and return movement as a characteristic of a creative minority. In other words, because the Greek religion stayed on the mountain of the highest religious mystery they reached, they perished in history, and Christianity survived in history because it came down from the mountain of transfiguration of the highest religious mystery.
But today I say, < This is my son, the chosen one; listen to him! > tries to focus on the main text.
4. < This is my son; listen to me! > What does the word mean?
As I said before, the text is closely connected with Peter's confession of faith in Jesus and the ensuing battle between Jesus and Peter over the direction of the Messiah. Peter saw Jesus' words and power and recognized Jesus as the Christ. But when Jesus said that he would now be crucified, Peter vehemently opposes it. The Greek form of the expression that Jesus rebuked Peter and that Peter went to Jesus is epitimao, meaning to rebuke, rebuke, reproach equally. What does it mean? The battle between Jesus and Peter was not a battle between a teacher and a disciple or a king and a servant, but a battle between humans and humans, on equal footing.
Peter believed that Jesus was not an ordinary man, but the Son of the living God. And now, with his power, he expected that Jesus would wipe away all the oppression, absurdity, and misery that exist on this earth and usher in the second Davidic era. But Jesus is going to die on his own. It is victory over death. Peter's understanding of Christ was real and material, and Jesus' understanding of Christ was spiritual and spiritual. This is where the fight took place.
Then < This is my son, the chosen one; listen to him! >What is the meaning of the sound in the clouds of poetry?
first. It means that Jesus is different from Moses, who was in charge of the law, and Elijah, the highest peak among the prophets.
is. That Jesus is the Son of God.
second. Now, you have given up your understanding of the earthly Christ and
is to accept
third. As we meditated in the last issue of the Fountain of the Word (No. 100), what Jesus does, namely, the Holy Spirit of God
to release the oppressed, to restore sight to the blind, and to set the prisoners free
It means my will.
5. Closing Story /
I think this transfiguration event is more important than Peter's confession of faith. Because the transfiguration event is an event that God Himself acknowledged Jesus??understanding of Christ and sealed it with the Holy Spirit.
