A more complete mediator/Hebrews 8:1-6
◈ Proposition: Jesus Christ is the more perfect Mediator.
◈ Purpose: To understand the nature of Christ's intercession and to gain assurance and comfort.
◈ Introduction: It has the meaning of being a reconciler of mediation. Examples of human intercessors are Abraham, Moses, the prophets, and the priests. However, the only mediator between the perfect God and man is Jesus Christ. Meaning of intercession = Interpretation, interpreter, talking around, etc.
1. Seated at the right hand of the throne of God
A. Meaning that he is seated at the right hand of the throne of God
1. The two pillars of the sanctuary (1 Kings 7:15-22)
2. The high priest was anointed before Jachin.
B. Jesus Christ became the High Priest of the heavenly sanctuary.
1. He became our high priest.
2. He is protecting the stool for us.
3. He is offering His blood and sacrifice for us.
C. We must rely on Him, be encouraged, and ponder His work.
1. Psalm 16:8 I will not be moved.
2. Psalm 109:31 He will save.
2. He is in the true heavenly temple.
A. The earthly sanctuary is a type and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary.
1. The priests of the earthly sanctuary are the shadows of the heavenly sanctuary.
2. All the institutions of the earthly sanctuary are also a type of the true.
B. The true temple of the New Testament is in heaven.
1. In the Old Testament, there was no distinction between holy places (temple). (Matthew 18:20)
2. We are worshiping in the heavenly temple.
3. The Lord is the high priest there.
C. Jesus Christ is the High Priest of the true temple.
1. He is at the right hand of God.
2. You are with us today again (Matthew 28:19)
3. He is the mediator of a better covenant.
A. A Better Covenant
1. Old Covenant - A temporary, fleshly promise to Israel.
2. New Covenant - For those who believe, the promise of eternal life, the promise of heaven
3. Better promises require better intercession.
B. Because the mediator is certain, the covenant is certain.
1. Contents of the covenant = redemption, eternal life, guarantee of heaven - through faith in Jesus Christ
2. Make a promise through Jesus Christ.
C. The promise we have is sure because the mediator is certain, so the contract is sure.
1. We must have confidence and faith in Jesus Christ, the more sure mediator of God's sure promise.
◈ Conclusion: Having made better intercession and better covenants, let us look to the Lord and become victorious Christians with confidence and courage.
