My earnest expectations and hopes are
<Philippians 1:19-26>
19I know that this will lead to my salvation through your supplication and the help of the Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ. 20According to my earnest expectation and hope, I will not be ashamed of anything, but as before, I now have complete courage, so that whether I live or die, Christ may exist in my body. 21 For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. 22 But if living in the flesh is the fruit of my work, I do not know what it will hide. 23 I am caught between the two, the desire to depart and be with Christ. 24 But it is better for you that I remain in the flesh. 25 I know for sure that I will live and will abide with all of you for the advancement and joy of your faith. 26 For I am with you again, that Christ Jesus so that your boasting in me may abound.
1. Words that begin
Everyone has earnest expectations and hopes. The earnest expectation and hope of ambitious people is to advance and gain power. The earnest expectation and wish of scholars and professors is to write original and excellent dissertations or academic books. The earnest expectation and hope of the soldiers is to advance. The earnest expectation and desire of those who run commerce or business is to earn a lot of money. The earnest expectation and hope of all parents is that their children do well. Unfortunately, there are some people who do not have expectations and hopes, but earnest expectations and hopes. The earnest expectation and hope of the non-military people of North Korea, a military powerhouse, is not to sail. The earnest expectations and hopes of the thieves, regardless of their status, are not discovered, and they continue to eat bribes and public money.
2. Sincere expectations and hopes
Paul, who lived with legalistic expectations and hopes, persecuted and destroyed Jesus and the church. One day, on the way to Damascus to arrest the church members, I was radically changed through the spiritual experience of meeting the resurrected Jesus. As a result, his expectations and hopes for high religious and social status changed. Paul's earnest expectations and hopes after meeting the Lord Jesus were completely different from those of the world. Also, it was not the same as the earnest expectations and hopes of the church members who believe in the same Lord Jesus.
From newborn babies to the elderly, there is no person without earnest expectations and hopes. The question is who or what we eagerly expect and hope for. Another serious problem is that the world's earnest expectations and desires are not without fulfillment, but eventually they all fall apart or break up. Early on, the prophet Isaiah reminded us, “Do not lean on life; his breath is in his nostrils. Isaiah 2:22.
The Apostle Paul had earnest expectations and hopes that were different from other people as he walked with the Lord Jesus. He told the Philippians that he knew for sure that the bad conditions, such as his imprisonment and the envy of the brothers of the faith, resulted in the prayers of the saints and the help of the Holy Spirit, so that they would become sanctified and achieve eternal salvation. Therefore, he confessed, “According to my earnest expectation and hope, I am not ashamed of anything, but I am still fully confident as before, that Christ may be glorified in my body, whether by life or death.”
Isn't it common for people to commit all kinds of shameful things without hesitation because of their earnest expectations and hopes for lust for honor, water, lust, and lust? Considering such a phenomenon, the earnest expectations and hopes of the Apostle Paul, the words and deeds without shame and the personality of faith that exalts Christ, are simple, yet noble.
While the children were sitting around to see their death, the father expressed his earnest expectations and hopes with all his might. “Children, there is no one in the world who can match your mother's culinary skills. I can still smell the pancakes that your mother makes. Come on, you go and get just one pancake.” Gapdol, who went to get pancakes, returned empty-handed after a while. The father with the child said, “No, why did you just come?” Then, Gapdol said, “Mom is like that. I have nothing to give my father, nothing but treat the guests who will come to condolences tomorrow.”
If possible, please listen to the earnest expectations and wishes of others.
