John 4:31-38
The story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman recorded in John 4 raises several important themes. These are God's love for one lost soul, one spirit that has been abandoned even by people, the natural way of evangelism and the life of witnesses, and the teachings about the worship that must be offered with God and spirit and true worship, and so on. Another very important topic is taught in the dialogue between Jesus and his disciples, which appears briefly in the middle of this story. It is “to complete his work” (v.34b). The Lord describes this as “your food” and says it is the most important thing in your life and ministry. If it was Jesus' food to complete God's work, it should also be food for us as Jesus' disciples. What must we as disciples of Jesus do to fully accomplish God's work?
1. You must know ( ) what God wants ( ). (v.31-34)
“He said to them, I have food to eat of which you do not know.” (v.32)
2. The will of God must be applied to ( ) as ( ). (v.34-38)
“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to do his work.
This is the consummation” (v.34).
Just as Jesus foreshadowed the anointing of the Holy Spirit from above, his love for the Father, and the glory of the kingdom of heaven beyond the sufferings of the cross, and accomplished God's work, we too can discern God's will I pray that you will become servants of the Lord who fully accomplish the Lord's work while previewing the praise of God that will come in the future.
