Title: Old Testament Illustrations of Justification/Romans 4

OT EXAMPLES OF CONTENTS Justification

Romans 4

1. Abraham's impartial (1-8)

① Acts and beliefs of the law

Abraham was not justified by works. If you are justified by works, you have something to boast about, but not before God. Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6).

God is righteous regardless of works. It goes without saying that the worker gets paid. If we are justified by our works, this is not grace.

It is by grace through faith that God counts the ungodly as impartial.

② The grace of the forgiveness of sins - Shin-deuk Lee through the example of David

Unlike Abraham, David was a figure in the age of the Mosaic Law. David, who was praised as a righteous man at that time, committed a sin because he acted against the law, but God forgave him and made him righteous. David called himself a happy man by the grace of God.

③ Faith and Righteousness (5)

Man is recognized as impartial by God by faith, not by works of the law.

2. The promise to Abraham (9-17)

① Justification without circumcision (9-12)

At that time, the Jews argued that only those who were circumcised could receive God's blessing and be justified by God. But Abraham was justified by faith before being circumcised. Therefore, Abraham was uncircumcised and became the father of all believers. Therefore, circumcision and justification are irrelevant.

② Justification unrelated to the law (13-17)

The law has nothing to do with Abraham. The law was given hundreds of years after Abraham. Before the law was given, Abraham had already been justified.

③ Justification and Faith

It is by faith, not by works of the law, that a person is justified. Abraham's justification shows the principle of justification applicable to both Gentiles and Jews.

3. Abraham's faith (18-25)

What is the faith of Aburaham who has just been justified?

① The God Abraham believed in

Abraham's faith in the omnipotence of God to bring something out of nothing and something out of death.

② The essence of faith

Abraham trusted God in an extreme situation where he could not hope. Faith is always looking to God. It was Abraham's faith that looked to God in spite of being ruthless and hopeless.

③ Abraham’s faith and the resurrection of Jesus

Abraham's faith - from nothing to existence, from death to life,

Our faith is justified by faith in God who raised Jesus from the dead. We must have the faith of the resurrection and the faith of eternal life.
