Title: On the Feast/John 7:10-13

Subject: Feasts/John 7:10-13

Contrary to the invitation of his brothers, Jesus came to Jerusalem quietly and tried to keep the Feast of Tabernacles, but it shows that the rumors and fame of Jesus Christ have already become a topic of discussion among Jews and pilgrims. We try to think about the attitude of true faith through the text.

1. After the brothers went up to the feast

1) To enjoy the holidays

This is primarily because Jesus said that he would not go up, so it can be seen that they went up to the festival even among themselves, but in the light of their unbelief, they went up to the festival because the joy of the Lord and the thought of participating in the festival preceded it. It can be seen that

According to the text that states that the reason Jesus did not go up to the feast was to avoid the Jews who wanted to kill him, Jesus' heart would not have been very clear. Nevertheless, they left Jesus Christ behind and went up to Jerusalem.

This reminds us of the voice Jesus said in 6:67, [Jesus said to the twelve, Do you also want to go?]

2) Our attitude of faith

2. He also went up, but he did it in secret, not revealing it.

1) Jesus also went up to the feast.

①This shows how God went up to the Jews and kept the feasts.

Deuteronomy 16:16 Every male among you, on the third day of the year, on the Feast of Unleavened Bread, on the Feast of Weeks, and on the Feast of Tabernacles, in the place of the Lord your God, show him to the Lord, but not to the Lord in public.

② Risking death

According to the beginning of the text stating that the reason Jesus did not go up to the Feast of Tabernacles was because the Jews were trying to kill Jesus Christ, it can be said that Jesus' going up to Jerusalem was a posture prepared for death. Of course, because Jesus knew everything, he knew that the time of the cross of death had not yet come, but Jesus' journey to Jerusalem certainly contained a dangerous element.

③To us today

Although Jesus risked his life to keep the feast, we should think about how serious consideration and interest he has in keeping Sundays and attending worship services.

④ Appearance of the disciples

When Jesus went to save Lazarus, the disciples said,

John 11:8 The disciples said to him, Rabbi, the Jews have just been stoned to stone.

Do you want to go there again?

When said, Thomas, called Didymus, said,

John 11:16 Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with the Lord.

Hanira

said.

⑤ We also need to seriously consider the image of Jesus and Thomas.

there is

2) He did it in secret.

This does not mean that Jesus went up alone, but that even if he went with his disciples, he did not reveal himself publicly and kept the feast quietly.

This reminds me of [the idea of hiding the Messiah], that is, although Jesus went up to Jerusalem several times, he quietly entered and entered Jerusalem until the event of carrying the cross on the last Passover.

You didn't do it publicly. This is proof that all of the Lord's work reached the climax (climax) in the event of the crucifixion in Jerusalem.

3. Attitudes toward Jesus of the Jews and the crowd

1) Jewish attitude

① Here, the term “Jew” is characteristic of John for the people of Jerusalem, and refers to religious and political leaders such as Pharisees, scribes, and priests.

②[Searching for Jesus]- The reason they are looking for Jesus is, of course, that they are looking for him with a [hostile] attitude as in verse 1. The reason, as I have said again and again, was that he did not keep the tradition of the Sabbath and called God his Father.

In fact, out of the 34 expressions of [find] in the Gospel of John, this is used 17 times (Meryl C. Tenni).

③[Where is he] If we take advantage of the atmosphere of the text, the word [he] can be interpreted as [where is he?] as an expression of contempt and hatred.

④ That is, the attitude of the Jews was a hostile feeling towards Jesus Christ itself.

Why were they forced to be hostile to Jesus Christ? The reason is that they have no heart to accept the truth, and have darkened their minds to maintain their religious and political privileges.

2) the attitude of the crowd

①[The crowd] means the general public or the pilgrims who gathered in Jerusalem at that time.

Therefore, some of them must have come from Galilee, and have seen the miracles of Jesus.

There must have been those who had been satisfied with the miracle of the Five Byeong-Eye.

②[There is a lot of gossip]

Gossip in the Bible is largely a result of an attitude of unbelief.

In the days of Moses, the Jews grumbled in the wilderness and murmuring about Jesus have the same meaning, expressing murmuring and dissatisfaction with unbelief.

③[or called a good person]

To be a good person here does not mean that he has the attitude of true faith, that is, he has the faith to be saved. Just as the disciples said,

Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?

Matthew 16:14 And they said, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and some say Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

words that express the thoughts of

④[Or one that deceives the crowd]

When it comes to deceiving the crowd, the word [to deceive] is the word for [deceiver], which means [deceiver]. By calling himself [the Messiah], he deceives the people.

Acts 5:36 Tedah got up earlier and boasted about himself, and about four hundred people followed him.

When he was slain, all those who followed him scattered and disappeared.

Acts 5:37 After that, in the course of registration, Judah of Galilee arose, and seduced the people after him, and he also perished.

All those who followed are scattered.

Jesus' reformation would have seemed to them as a deceit when he reformed the tradition of the Sabbath, ate with publicans and prostitutes, and even asserted the futility of the Jerusalem temple.

⑤ Field of the heart

This has great implications for us. Looking at the same event and the same image of Jesus Christ, why are the reactions so different? It is not that the work of Jesus Christ is dualistic, but that there is a problem in the hearts of those who accept it.

2 Corinthians 2:16 To this man a smell from death unto death.

To that man it is a fragrance from life to life; who can bear it?

When sunlight shines on paddy fields, it produces crops and produces fruit, but when sunlight shines on wetlands, malaria occurs.

⑥ One of the things we should pay attention to here is the weakness of the crowd.

.Spiritual Ignorance

The crowds show that they are influenced by [rumors] and [opinion] and [opinion] of the religious leaders of the time, rather than by accurate knowledge and belief in Jesus Christ.

In any age, we are bound to follow the views of the experts. So, from time immemorial, doctors, lawyers, and religious people have been respected for their specialties regardless of any other factors. Because it is very difficult for ordinary people to reach that detailed knowledge and deep state. Therefore, the conscientious attitude of experts is very important, and in many cases we have to leave it to their insight. Therefore, the misdiagnosis of doctors is terrifying, the misjudgment of lawyers is terrifying, and the cults or cults of religious people are harmful to society and individuals.

is going to be a big problem.

ii. Fear

The Bible clearly shows that some of the crowd call Jesus Christ [a good man], but as verse 13 says, [the Jews were afraid] and they do not speak openly.

Are we often unable to testify of Christ because of our fear of people?

Proverbs 29:25 The fear of man is a snare, but he who trusts in the LORD will be safe.

**** conclusion  ****

1. The attitude of the brothers of Jesus.

I loved the world and went my own way,

heart like thorns

Matthew 13:22 Those that were sown among thorns are those who hear the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it does not bear fruit.

2. Attitudes of Jesus and His Disciples

*If you die, you will die.

Essence 4:16 Go, gather all the Jews that are in Shushan, and fast for me, day and night, neither eat nor drink for three days, neither with me nor with my maid.

After fasting, I will go to the king against the ordinance, and if I perish, I perish.

*Dom's posture

John 11:16 Thomas, who was called Didymus, said to the other disciples, Let us also go, that we may die with the Lord.

3. The attitude of the Jews and the crowd

It is not only the hostile attitude of the gospel and ignorance of the truth, but it also shows that it is not possible to become a life-risking faith for the truth.

A heart like a roadside and a stone field

Matthew 13:19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and sows in his heart.

They take it away, and this is the one sown by the wayside.

Matthew 13:20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, when they heard the word, they immediately received it with joy.

Matthew 13:21 It has no root in it, so it endures for a while, and then tribulation or persecution arises because of the word.

You will soon fall
