Old Testament
1. I will stand at my watch, and I will stand in the fortress, and I will wait and see what he will say to me and see how he will answer my questions
2. The LORD answered and said to me, Write this vision and write it plainly on tablets, so that you can read it while running.
3. This vision has an appointed time, and its end will come quickly, and it will not lie. Even if it is delayed, wait for it; it will not delay, it will surely come true.
4. Behold, his heart is proud and dishonest in him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

sermon
Jesus told a parable about a man who believed in himself righteous and despised others. Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed separately, thank God, I am not like other people, extortion and adultery, and I am not like this publican. I fasted twice a week and prayed that I would tithe my income.
But the publican stood afar off and did not dare raise his eyes to the sky, and prayed, “God, have mercy on me, I am a sinner.” Jesus said that among these two, a tax collector who was not a Pharisee was justified by God.
In the eyes of the Jews at that time, Pharisees were righteous and tax collectors were sinners. The Pharisees were people who valued tradition, kept the law thoroughly, and tried to keep more than the standard of the law.
People would have respected him when he came to pray. On the other hand, the publican was a slave to Rome with the blood of his people, and he was like a deceiver who collected more to fill their stomachs. People would have thought that it was hypocrisy to pretend to be good for nothing.
But why did the Lord say that? This is because the Pharisees boasted of their righteous deeds, judged others by their own standards, and ignored others, trying to be accepted by God for their own righteousness.
On the other hand, the publican realized that he was a sinner before God and humbly asked for mercy. What are we proud of to God and man?
