Title: One Day / Luke 8:22-25
One day he got into a boat with his disciples and said to them, "Let's cross over to the other side of the lake." So Jesus fell asleep as he set out on the way. Just then, a gust of wind struck the lake, and the boat was full of water, and it was in danger. The disciples came to him and woke him up, saying, "Lord, Lord, we are about to die." Jesus awoke and rebuked the wind and the waves, and it ceased and there was a calm. And he said to his disciples, "Where is your faith?" They were afraid and marveled, and said to one another, "Who is this that he commands the wind and the water, and they obey him?" (Luke 8:22-25)
2001 is gone and 2002 is here. We were all one year older. Guys, how long will we live in the future? A person who lives 60 years will live 21,900 days. A person who lives to be 70 will have 25550 days. But I think the more important question than how long we live is the question of what meaning those many days have for us. A few years ago, at the Cannes Film Festival, the film won the Palme d'Or. It is said that the last day of an old writer dying of illness was made into a movie. That title touched my heart. Many people dream of a great life, but few study a great day. But great days come together to make a great life. Without a precious day, there would be no great life.
The Gospels are both sensitive and insensitive to the marking of time. Sometimes the Gospels express the time of an event with relative interest, such as midnight, dawn, or the next day. On the other hand, today's text is insensitively expressed in the word Iran. The day of the incident in the text was also such an ordinary day. We would like to meditate on the meaning of our day through the days of these disciples.
First of all, a day is an unknown time that is in the hands of God. The disciples woke up that morning without knowing what was going to happen to them. At the beginning of that morning, it looked like any other day. But they met a storm at sea that very day and nearly died. But none of the disciples knew it would happen. This is our day. So we can't speak out loud about what's going to happen during this time today. It is entirely in God's hands. Therefore, each morning we must gird ourselves with humility. The Bible advises, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what will happen in one day” (Proverbs 27:1). We don't even know if it's going to happen in our lives.
Second, our day should begin with anticipation. It was a nightmare day for the disciples, but looking back, it was also a thrilling day to witness the amazing power of the Lord to calm the wind and the sea at the same time. On that very day, the Lord showed before them the majesty and power of the Creator. That day they saw the unimaginable sight of the sea submitting to the Lord. That day became an unforgettable day in their life.
Third, our days should be days with God. When David wakes up in the morning, he confesses that he is satisfied with the image of God (Psalm 17:15). It is opening the day in God, the Lord of time, who has prepared unexpected graces. If you are with God, every day becomes a banquet of blessings. It will be a day of bliss when you taste unexpected blessings.
If you read in Greek, the pronunciation becomes . The word ‘hemenda’ is interesting in Korean. It is said that one wanders about immature things because they are not good at it, and it is said that one wanders around because they are distracted by something. Our days should not become days when we are lost according to our desires or are lost because we are inexperienced in the life of the saints. I sincerely hope that you will always be greeted with blessings in God.
