Sermons for Preaching

Title: One thing is lacking/ Mark 10:21

One lack of content / Mark 10:21

Key Verse: “Go, sell all that you have, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven” (Mark 10:21).

Word: I would like to think about a few things in today's text. First, it is saying that you cannot become a disciple of Jesus only with the praise and wealth of the world. The young man in this text was a ruler, a rich man, and had nothing to envy in the world. However, there was one thing that prevented him from becoming a disciple of Jesus. What is it that is lacking?

That's pure obedience. This young man could not obey because of his wealth. Because obedience is the only way to meet God. John 14:15 says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” The rich young man could not give up his wealth.

Second, money can buy everything in this world, but it cannot buy what God has: love, joy, peace, salvation, eternal life. A couple married and had their first child, a child with a disability. It was so unfortunate that I thought life was not fair. So, whoever adopted this child, I decided to entrust it to an institution for children with disabilities, and I talked to my mother. Then the mother's mother said to her daughter, "I understand your feelings. But you will never be happy if you do not accept that the child is a gift from God. Do what you can to be a good mother. I have given you many blessings and gifts so far, so use them on this child. That is what God wants.”

Although the mother's words were not what they wanted to hear, they accepted and obeyed the words they needed to hear. Eventually, because of the disabled child, the married life of the couple changed into a more meaningful and richer life. Let's all live with the belief that man can do all things, but only God can do everything.

Third, eternal life refers to living like God, and it can be called a life of giving and a life of giving. “You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9).

As he became poor, sacrificed, emptied, and died for us, I pray that you may become a true disciple of Jesus and enjoy eternal life by becoming the master of material things and obedience through a life of giving.

Prayer: God, help me not to live the foolish life of losing Jesus Christ for material things. I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
