Subject: Oneness in the Holy Spirit

Text: Genesis 12:1-3, Ephesians 4:1-6

On the tombstones in the park cemetery, the difference between Christians and non-Christians was stark. Tombstones of non-Christians had their 'name and surname' in front of their names, and tombstones of Christians had the title of 'office of the church' (or saint) in front of their names. If the gravestone of a non-Christian revealed the root of the flesh, the gravestone of a Christian revealed the root of the spirit. If non-Christian tombstones illuminated the past, Christian gravestones also illuminated the future. All Christians are heading for their heavenly home. Of course, it is thanks to God's love for us (John 3:16). It is thanks to the victory through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ for us (John 16:33). It is thanks to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter for us (John 16:13). The move-in to your hometown is also accomplished by the Holy Spirit and the Bride saying, “Come!” (Rev 22:17).

The scattering of mankind was the result of the Tower of Babel that was built to disobey God (Genesis 11:9). It was God's judgment through the confusion of language. The healing of this language confusion is achieved by the Pentecost of the Holy Spirit in Mark's upper room. Although they were in various languages, they appeared to have one thing: ‘speaking of the great works that God has done’ (Acts 2:11). And the community that started like this becomes a channel for God's 'unification'. It is the work of salvation that is accomplished through the church established by the Lord (Matthew 16:18,19). In Jesus Christ, Gentiles and Jews become one (Ephesians 2:14-22). In the church of Jesus, all people become one. This history of unity is the grace we experience on our journey to our heavenly home. This is what happens in the process of our transformation that the Lord accomplishes (Philippians 3:20,21).

The 'unity of the church', that is, the 'work of unity' is salvation. In the parable of the prodigal son, the culmination of the festival is the unity of the second and the first in the love of the father. The father was the father of two prodigal sons. One of them is the second one who ran away from home. There was another eldest son who stayed at home, but misunderstood his father's deep love and was living with dissatisfaction. The human father, Isaac, provided the spark of conflict and strife to his two sons (Genesis 27). However, the Heavenly Father Jesus spoke of makes the two sons who turned their backs on each other, the two prodigals, eventually become one (Luke 15:11-32). If you were created to be one and become two, that in itself is unhappiness. The overcoming of that unhappiness lies in the ‘restoration of unity’ according to the divine will.

Today's New Testament text (Eph 4:1-6) is the 'command of church unity' (Ephesians 4:1-3) and the 'foundation of church unity' (Eph 4:4-6) is. There is a meaningful expression at the end of the ecclesiology (Ephesians 3:21). It is the expression “in the church and in Christ”. Another representation of the same entity. Each member must perform a role worthy of their calling (Ephesians 4:1). “With all humility and gentleness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love, striving to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:2,3). The grounds for unity of the Church are so clear. “One body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God” (Ephesians 4:4-6). It is the work of the Holy Spirit to make us one. “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit” (Ephesians 4:3b). It is a present participle verb. It is telling the saints to work diligently, earnestly, and without interruption toward the goal of unity with the Church.
