Sermons for Preaching

Title: Our Citizenship/Philippians 3:17-21

The text consists of contrasting phrases. “People who live by imitation” in verse 17 and “people who live as enemies of the cross” in verse 18 If you look at verses 19-21, you can compare the appearance of people who live two opposite lives of faith.

1. Our citizenship is in heaven.

See verse 19. “Their end is destruction. Their god is a boat.” A boat is not a sailing boat here. In Greek, it means 'intestine'. It is said that the ship made God. Those who eat and drink and live according to the lusts of the flesh, centering on the stomach. It refers to a person who lives with pleasure and material possessions. Those who live like this are expressed as those who live as enemies of the cross.

But look at verse 20 on the contrary. “But our citizenship is in heaven” Those who have our citizenship in heaven live by the law of God, the word of God. Those who have citizenship in heaven live with God as their master. “If you have been raised with Christ, seek the above. where Christ is seated at the right hand of the throne of God” (Colossians 3:1). Which side are you on? Those of us who claim to have faith are living as enemies of the cross, serving the world's pleasures and material things as masters. Those who live with God as their master have citizenship in heaven and live a life that pleases God, that is, they live by imitating us.

2. He transforms us into an image like a glorious body.

The second is to compare what is glory. See verse 19. What does “their glory is in their shame” mean? To know shame as glory. Why? The reason is that we do not put shame on what is shameful. Some people boast of shameful things. For example, ‘I have a few stars’, ‘I drink all day, but I don’t get drunk’ It is like there are people who show the shameful things of the world with great pride.

3. We are waiting for the Lord Jesus Christ to come as our Savior.

Dear pastoral saints,

A person who only looks at the ground will never see the blue sky.

Consider the principle of an airplane. It's amazing to see that heavy airplane take off. However, in order for an airplane to take off from the ground, it must run at full speed in order to rise from the ground to the sky. Earth has a gravitational force that attracts all objects to the ground. If the propelling force of the airplane is weaker than gravity, it cannot float. It is floating in the sky because it has a force that is greater than gravity. The same goes for faith. If the strength of the bond on this earth is stronger, it will be held by the earth and live. However, if the power of faith is greater, our faith can fly just as a heavy airplane can take off. If you only look at the earth and seek only the earth, you will never taste the taste of faith. Only when the power of faith is greater can we run and fly on that runway. I pray in the name of the Lord that your faith will sprint through the earth and become the children of the Lord who live worthy lives as citizens of heaven.
