God's judgments and punishments for sin are so heavy that it sometimes becomes unbearable. At such times, we are prone to doubts such as, 'Has not God forsaken me?' and 'Does God really love me?' So, how should we understand God who whips us?
1. Waiting God
God's judgment and discipline are terrifying and severe. It is the most terrifying and dreadful thing for God to become our enemy and take up a sword. We must always be careful not to let this happen. However, even though God became our enemy because of our iniquities and took the sword of chastening, God is waiting for us to repent and confess our past sins (verses 40-41). He does not forget the covenant he made in the past. And he will surely fulfill that promise. Only acknowledging the sins and lusts you have committed against God and repenting of them is the only way to start a blessed life again.
2. The God Who Does Not Forget His Covenant
God is a God of promise. Through his promise to Abraham, God became the Father of all who believe. And he promised the Messiah who would save all mankind. God never changes his promises. God's promises are still valid when we are in our sins (verse 42), but our sins have put them to rest. As long as we turn from our sins, repent, and abide in the word of God's covenant again, God will fulfill His promises. Therefore, we must hold on to God's promises in the midst of any hardship and persecution. Even in the midst of suffering, we must rely on the promises God has given us. In the midst of being judged, we must rely on God's promises to come to God. The word of the covenant is the bridge between us and God.
3. Our God
Physical parents may be ashamed of their childish children at times, but God is not ashamed of His children. Even if your children sin and become rebellious, He does not completely forsake them. He hates them and does not consider them to be destroyed (verse 44). Just as a father disciplines and rebukes those who have erred, God disciplines His children. But God still loves the people he has made and chosen by his hands. And he never breaks the promise he has made with his children. God is truly our Father.
God has chosen us as a people from the pit of distrust and ignorance, rebellion and disobedience. God still loves us who are still lacking and rebellious and gives us great grace. Sometimes, he takes the rod for his stubborn sins. I hope that you will become saints who overcome the temptations of sin by looking at God who never gives up on us.
