Peace and Peace (John 20:19-22)
John 20:19-22 “On this day, the first evening after the Sabbath, when the doors were shut where the disciples had gathered for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, saying, “Peace be with you.” 20 After saying this, he showed his hands and his side. When the disciples saw the Lord, they rejoiced. 21 And Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you." 22 After saying this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit." -Amen.
In the Bible, peace, peace, comfort, etc. are used in similar terms - shalom,! wOlv; (shalom) John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid.”
In the Old Testament prophecy of Isaiah, Isaiah 9:6 'For to us a child is born, and to us a son is given, and the government is upon his shoulders, and his name is Wonderful, Counselor, Almighty God, Everlasting Father. Ra, it will be called the Prince of Peace.'
1. Peace comes when you are sure of the risen Lord
After Jesus died on the cross, the Jews and the Romans now began to persecute even those who followed the Lord. The Lord came to the disciples while they were closing the door and holding their breath in fear.
19-20' On the evening of this day, the first day after the Sabbath, when the doors were shut at the place where the disciples had gathered for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the middle and said, "Peace be with you." 20 After saying this, he showed his hands and his side. When he saw the Lord, he rejoiced.”
The reason why emptiness, anxiety, and frustration come in our lives is because we have not discovered the Lord of the Resurrection. Anyone, even a death row inmate waiting to be executed in prison, can hear from the prison evangelists that if they accept Jesus and believe in the day of the resurrection, their face will change and they will die in peace.
John 8:32 'You will know the truth and the truth will set you free' People become alike according to what they see.
If you look at the monk Shakyamuni who forsakes the world and abandons his self, he ignores history. Following the mystic ignores reality. Even if you watch TV or a movie, it becomes a little bit similar. Our hope is so glorious when we see the resurrection of Jesus. Believe it and you will be filled with hope. He said that the disciples hid because they were afraid of the Jews, but when the Lord came and showed the body of the resurrection, the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
2. You will find peace by being filled with the Holy Spirit
22'When he had said these words, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.' Romans 14:17 'The kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.'
Being filled with the Holy Spirit does not happen automatically. It takes effort. The most prominent case of being filled with the Holy Spirit in the Bible is prayer. When Jesus ascended into heaven, he told his disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit that the Father would give them to them, Acts 1:4, “They gathered together with the apostles and commanded them, saying, ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard from me’. He told me, that 120 of them gathered in Mark's upper room for 10 days and prayed with all their hearts.
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”
3. There is peace when we are faithful to the will of the Lord
People who work hard work get sick, but they go to work and work while warming up. And they say that there are no birds who are sick because they cannot lie down because they are sick. While we receive the kingdom of God and live in the world, if we constantly run to spread the wonderful news of the gospel, there will be no time for fear and worry. Those who live a life faithful to the gospel have peace.
Peter, who was imprisoned, sang and slept in prison. Then an angel came and woke him up, opened the prison door on its own, and experienced a wonderful miracle of coming out of prison. Daniel and his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were not eaten in the lions' den in the Old Testament times, were also at peace without being burned in the fire. Even though Paul, who was faithful to the gospel, was on the verge of death several times, he was able to be faithful with all his zeal until he fulfilled his heavenly calling. Those who are faithful to the gospel live as long as they live. If you avoid the witness of the gospel, you die faster. That is why the Lord said that he who dies for me shall live.
21 "Jesus said again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you."
We are called to witness the gospel to the world and have an apostolic mission sent by the Lord. All saints who are called in Christ have become disciples toward the world in a broad sense. If the Lord truly called us and sent us to the world to bear witness to the gospel, just as God sent His Son into the world, we too should be in that situation and keep our peace.
John 8:29 “He who sent me is with me, and he has not left me alone, because I always do what pleases him.” 30 When he had said this, many believed. 31 Therefore Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
It is right for those who believe in Jesus to show the face of peace. This is because the hope of the state of the soul is the kingdom of heaven, the emotion of living by believing in the Almighty, and the sense of purpose to live is a life that testifies to the gospel of glory. 2 Thessalonians 3:16 'May the Lord of peace Himself grant you peace in every way and in every event. The Lord be with you all.' .
