Old Testament

1 Protect me, O God, for in You I take refuge.

2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord, and I have no good besides you."

3 The saints of the earth are honorable; all my joy is in them.

4 Those who offer gifts to other gods will suffer more; I will not offer drink offerings of their blood, nor will I call their names with my lips.

5 The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup; he keeps my portion.

6 The area that you lined up for me is in a beautiful place; how beautiful is my inheritance.

7 Blessed be the LORD, who admonished me; night after night my conscience instructs me.

8 I have set the LORD always before me; he is at my right hand; I will not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart rejoices, and my spirit rejoices, and my body also lives in safety.

10 For you will not leave my soul in Sheol, nor will you destroy your holy one.

11 You will show me the way of life; in Your presence is the fulness of joy, and at Your right hand are eternal joys.

new testament

19 On the evening of this day, the first day after the Sabbath, when the doors of the place where the disciples had gathered for fear of the Jews were shut, Jesus came and stood in the midst and said, “Peace be with you.

20 When he had said this, he showed his hands and his side, and the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 And Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.

22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit.

23 If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven; and if you leave anyone's sins, they remain.

24 Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with him when Jesus came.

25 The other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." Thomas said to him, "I see the marks of the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the marks of the nails, and put my hand into his side.

“Unless I see it, I will not believe.”

26 Eight days later, when the disciples were in the house again, Thomas was with them, and the doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood in the midst and said, "Peace to you."

27 And he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and reach out your hand and put it in my side; so that you may not be unbelievers, but believers.

28 Thomas answered and said, My Lord and my God.

29 Jesus said to him, "Do you believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and believe."

30 Jesus performed many other signs in front of the disciples that are not written in this book.

31 But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

Today's Gospel of John records the incident where the resurrected Jesus visited his disciples. John 20:31 records, "These are written so that you may believe ... and have life." To believe and have life, this is what God wants to give us.

What words written by John lead us to believe? When we hear the words of the resurrected Jesus coming to the disciples, we have faith. When the disciples were closing the doors for fear of the Jews, Jesus came among them and proclaimed, "Peace be with you." No difficulties or obstacles in this world can stop the Lord from coming to give life among us. This is because the risen Lord is an almighty God that transcends time and space.

There will be people who do not come to believe even after hearing these words. So did his disciple Thomas. Thomas was not present when the disciples met the risen Lord. The disciples said they had met the Lord, but he couldn't believe it. He said he wouldn't believe it until he saw it and touched it. Eight days later, when the Lord appeared again, Thomas confessed that he was my Lord and my God. The Lord said to Thomas, "Do you believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who believe without seeing."

The risen Lord is speaking to us today. There is life in the words, "Peace be with you."
