Old Testament
7. After that, his master's wife, beckoning him to Joseph, and begging him to lie with him.
8. Joseph refused, and said to his master's wife, "My master has not interfered with everything in the household, but has entrusted everything into my hands.
9. There is no one greater in this house than me, and the master has kept nothing from me, but you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God?
new testament
18. Servants, obey your masters in all things with fear, not only to the good and tolerant, but also to the demanding ones.
19. Even if you suffer unjustly, it is beautiful if you endure sorrow by thinking of God.
20. What praise is there if we are beaten for sin and endure it? But if we suffer for doing good and endure it, it is beautiful in the sight of God.
21. To this you were called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps.
22. He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.
23. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to him who judges righteously.
24. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live to righteousness. By His wounds you were healed.
25. Wherever you were once lost as sheep, now you have returned to the shepherd and overseer of your souls.
sermon
Who am I when no one is looking? When people are alone, they are more likely to succumb to temptation than to follow the right path. Joseph was tempted in an unseen place, but he triumphed in the consciousness of God's presence.
Why not give in to temptation? Sometimes, people secretly hope that temptation will come and want to enjoy the pleasures of the flesh, using the excuse that the situation is unavoidable. However, the reason we should not give in to temptation is because we have received God's law as saved children, our physical desires will never be satisfied, and the day will come when we must take responsibility for the consequences of our actions.
So how can you overcome temptation?
1. You must have the consciousness of the presence of God. Joseph refused the temptation, saying, “How can I do this great evil and sin against God?” We are the loved ones of God who He saved and bought with His blood. Therefore, God always takes care of us, protects us, and provides us with what we need. Let us recognize that we are living before the face of God.
2. Don't get entangled emotionally. The woman tried to manipulate Joseph by emotionally entwining him. If you are emotionally entangled with other people, you have no freedom, and you take away the freedom of others. God created each person as an independent being and gave them freedom. Do not try to infringe on the boundaries of others and forcefully manipulate them You just have to be together and have a good influence.
3. Obey the Holy Spirit. Joseph clearly refused the woman's request and followed God's will. Those who follow the lusts of the flesh will gain corruption from the flesh, and those who follow the lusts of the Spirit will gain eternal life through the spirit. Listen and obey the small voice of the Holy Spirit that comes from within.
4. If it is difficult to resist temptation, put it off and run away. Joseph took off his clothes and fled. It is foolish to wander around the seat of sin and pray for temptation to be overcome. Just as a lizard cuts off its tail and runs away, so if you decide to stay away from temptation, you live.
Although Joseph's body was imprisoned, his religious conscience was freed. Joseph's life seemed to have gone downhill, but God was with him and made him prosper in everything. If we obey God and follow the right path, God is responsible for the results.
