Title: Peter's Sermon/Acts 2:15-36
Content Ⅰ. entry
It is when a person becomes bold and when there is a certain dependence on something that gives strength to life. It's understandable when you watch the grass die and grow without a father or a mother. In addition, a child who is usually dehydrated can suddenly become a tyrant when he is with his father.
This is a principle that also applies to the flesh of the world. A person who has a strong backing to take care of someone's back is not afraid. It's not that you have power, it's that you have a strong backing behind you. Everyone! People change when a person who has always lived in poverty suddenly becomes rich. All of a sudden, you start to get perky and look down on people. Because this world has overblown the mindset that money can do anything, he wants to rule as a king if he has money.
That's not all. It is said that the tendency of thugs is changing these days. It is said that they act as a solution to catch people who can't pay and get their money, rather than exploiting them under the influence of the IMF. In any case, even those who think they have physical powers live a life of wretchedness.
But, do people like me and you, who have no background, no money, and no power, just have to live in despair every day? Moreover, if such laws of the world apply even in the church, which is a newly created community with Christ as Savior and Lord, such a church loses its existence value through radical expressions. However, there is a way for people like you and me who have no money, strength, or strength to make a difference. What is that? Now, through today's text, I hope you can understand that method.
II. text observation
1. Remembering Peter's Past
First of all, I think we need to recall the life of Peter before we examine the text closely. This is because Peter's sermon, which we are going to examine now, is not only faithful to the Word, but also unrestrained and full of confidence. Then, what I want to say is whether or not Peter was such a person in the first place. Of course, you will confidently say no. I know it's not, but looking back on what Peter was like in the past will help us realize more realistically how important Peter's change is.
As for Peter, Philip was from Bethsaida in the same town as Andrew and Peter (John 1:44) and was the son of John (Jonah) (Matthew 16:17; John 21:15). Also, while walking along the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting their nets into the sea. And in Mark 1:30 it says, "Simon's mother-in-law was lying in bed with a fever, and immediately they said to Jesus about her." In 1 Corinthians 9:5, "We are sisters like the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas." Do you not have the right to take your married wife with you?” He meets Paul who asks.
Peter, who was originally a Galilean villager and a sailor, was quick-tempered, but never learned anything. Now, we will look at it later, but according to Acts 4:13, "When we saw Peter and John talking without question, we thought that they were originally ignorant criminals, but they were amazed, and they knew that they had been with Jesus before that." In fact, it was an open secret.
Such a man is led to Jesus by Andrew (John 1:40-42) and attempts to transform himself into a fisher of men. But everyone! Changing people is a miracle among miracles. It is overly romantic to think that Peter's temperament and character will or will change soon. Matthew 4:18-20; Mark 1:16-18 both vividly record the scene of Peter's calling. “As they were walking along the seashore of Galilee, they saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting their nets into the sea, and they said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” They followed Jesus." It was.
Since then, Peter has experienced amazing miracles and made mistakes due to his characteristic hasty personality. It is clear that Peter's appearance, at least in his time with Jesus, was not so admirable.
In Matthew 14:28-31, while walking on the water, he could not see Jesus, but looked at the wind and was drowning. In Matthew 16:16-19, it says, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” They even make a surprise show with surprising confessions.
But in Matthew 16:21 and below, after hearing the announcement of Jesus' Passion, he said, "Lord, don't do that, for this will never happen to you." But he said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are a stumbling block to me. He does not think about things, but rather on the things of men.”
His hasty personality is evident when a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years touched Jesus' clothes and was healed. When Jesus asked who touched my clothes, Peter said, "No, it's not all." It is in the image of the crowd saying, “Mina!” (Luke 8:43-45) and slashing the ear of Malchus, who followed Judas to arrest Jesus. And he also witnessed the transfiguration of the Lord on the Mount of Transfiguration. He was also a person who wished to build three huts and live in Mt.
As Jesus said that he will deny the Lord three times, before the rooster crows, he denies the Lord three times and shouts. And when the Lord died such a tragic death on the cross, he may have forgotten the Lord's resurrection. He went back to where he originally fished.
Later, when the Lord appeared again and asked Peter three times if he loved me, Peter said that he loved the Lord. And it was Peter who returned to Jerusalem, witnessed the Ascension of the Lord, waited for the promised Holy Spirit, and prayed with one accord. This is the first sermon that Peter testified about Jesus right now after he died, and I think this has a really important meaning. There are 19 sermons in all in the book of Acts. And if you add up the other apologetics, there are about 25 sermons and apologetics. Peter is now preaching that first sermon.
Dear all! I pray that your life and me will be as full as Peter's life.
2. Peter's Apologetics (14-21)
In fact, it should be said that the long part in the front was an introduction to observing this part. Peter now apologizes to those who ridicule him for being drunk. We have already talked about the folly of closing our minds to subjective judgments about facts that we will never experience. An active and positive lifestyle will make us fat and rich.
1) It is the third hour...
First we need a general argument. Three o'clock is 9 a.m. our time. As already mentioned, Jews have a habit of fasting during festivals. The time you have to fast is 10 am, that is, until 4 pm our time. However, those who say they are drunk are clearly wrong, no matter what.
In any case, Peter tries to explain why this phenomenon, namely speaking in different tongues, can occur in the opening of the sermon. In explaining it, Peter's interest is not a phenomenon, but a thorough fulfillment of the promise.
2) It was spoken by the prophet Joel, saying,
To start with the conclusion, Peter's position is that this Pentecost of the Holy Spirit is the fulfillment of Joel 2:28-31. He is also reinterpreting the prophecies of Joel.
First of all, we need to understand under what context the book of Joel was written. The book of Joel is set during the reign of King Josiah. Athaliah, a woman who married in southern Judah from northern Israel through an arranged marriage, exercised her noble temperament, and when her son Ahaziah died, she killed all who would inherit the throne and took over the throne. However, during the purge of Athaliah, only Joashman escaped death under the protection of the high priest Jehoiada and lived in hiding in the temple for 6 years. Then, when Joash was 7 years old, Jehoiada killed Athaliah and made Joash to the throne. However, because Joash was young, he had to be greatly influenced by Jehoiada. This is how Joel's prophecy was written while Joash was still young. However, the direct motive for the writing of Joel was the devastation of the land due to locusts and drought. The Prophet describes the invasion of locusts in the form of an army, saying that they are a harbinger of the day of the Lord.
Then we now need to read Joel 2:28-31 and confirm those facts. “Afterward I will pour out my Spirit on all people, and your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions, and then I will pour out my Spirit on the male and female servants. Blood and fire and pillars of smoke, the sun will be darkened and the moon turned into blood like blood before the great and dreadful day of the LORD comes; but whoever calls on the name of the LORD will be saved, says the LORD. There will be those who will flee from Mount Zion and from Jerusalem on the highway;
