Title: Prediction of Jesus' suffering (Matthew 16:21)
Contents I. Correction of the wrong view of the Messiah
A. The People's Perspective
The various miraculous events that Jesus performed quickly spread throughout Judea. At that time, Nicodemus, a Jewish ruler among the Pharisees, came to Jesus and saw Jesus as a teacher who came from God.
Behind it was the will to use the power of Jesus who works great for the liberation of Israel. Also, when 5,000 people ate and filled twelve baskets with five bottles of food, Jesus knew that the people were trying to seize him and make him king by force, and Jesus’ disciples also expected and followed him as a future king of Judea. All.
B. To go up to Jerusalem and die
All the disciples and those who were seeing the miracles of Jesus were filled with new expectations. To those who expect good things to happen if they follow Jesus as a new political leader, Jesus is saying things that the disciples cannot understand.
In other words, he would go up to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, who were then members of the Sanhedrin Council, and be killed. These teachings of Jesus were words that perplexed the disciples. However, this teaching of Jesus was the only way to keep the disciples and the people from falling into a deeper misunderstanding, and it was something that Jesus had to tell them quickly.
C. The substitutionary death
It was something the disciples could not understand that Jesus would die in Jerusalem. However, the true form of Jesus was, as John the Baptist said, 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world'. The disciples did not understand, so Peter said, 'Don't do that, for this will never come to you.' These words were spontaneous, but there was also a heart of love and respect for the Lord. But the Lord rebuked Peter for this.
II. Resurrection in 3 days
A. Meaning of Resurrection
Jesus did not only say that he would die before his disciples, but that he would rise again on the third day after he died. However, we can see that there were no people who believed and expected that Jesus would be resurrected in the future.
However, when Jesus said that he would rise again on the third day after he died, it was not just the words of comfort to his disciples, but an important reason. Although the orthodox doctrines of Judaism clearly have the idea of the resurrection of the body, only Sadducees among the powerful at the time denied the resurrection of the body. The resurrection of Jesus itself points out the erroneousness of that doctrine and serves as a significant proof that he will be the firstfruits of all believers.
B. Purpose of Jesus' Resurrection
Jesus taught that He would be resurrected, and as He taught, He was resurrected, and we see that there is a clear purpose in it.
It was an important event in which the prophecies of the Bible were fulfilled.
[Luke 24:44-46] And he said to them, "This is what I said to you while I was with you, that everything that was written about me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets, and in the Psalms, must be fulfilled." make you realize
It was proof that Jesus was truly the Son of God.
[Romans 1:4] He was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead according to the spirit of holiness, our Lord Jesus Christ.
And it was so that millions of people in the world could believe and receive the forgiveness of their sins, and to let people living in this world know that there is a spiritual world in the eternal afterlife.
[1 Corinthians 15:18-19] -> Also, those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If our only hope in Christ is in this life, then of all men we are the most pitiful.
Not only that, but it was to make all those who believed in Jesus grow into people of true faith.
[1 Corinthians 15:14-17]->If Christ has not been raised up, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is also in vain, and we will be found as false witnesses of God, and we testify that God has raised Christ. If the dead had not been raised, then God would not have raised Christ. If the dead had not been raised, then Christ would not have been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain, and you are still in your sins. there will be
A more clear purpose is that Jesus Christ was resurrected to be the head of principalities and powers.[Philippians 2:9-10]
->Therefore God highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.
C. The Early Church....Central of the Message
Jesus died on the cross as he had been taught, and rose from the dead on the third day as promised. And while he stayed on this earth forty days, he appeared to the disciples of Jesus and told them about the kingdom of God. After that, as promised, He was filled with the Holy Spirit so that His disciples and people could preach the gospel.
III. first notice
A. There was an indirect notice
Jesus knew the condition and purpose of His disciples.
[John 2:24-25]->Jesus did not entrust his body to them, for he himself knew all men, and because he knew what was in a man, he needed no testimony of anyone.
By revealing Himself to them, He was hoping that they would not go astray, but that they would understand the work of Jesus and follow Him as a missionary. Therefore, He indirectly foretold death and resurrection. The first is that the day will come when the disciples of John will be taken away from the bridegroom when the disciples of Jesus are not fasting [Matthew 9:25].
Second, when the scribes and Pharisees asked for a sign, he spoke of the sign of Jonah and said, 'The Son of Man will be in the earth three days and three nights' as in the case of Jonah. [Matthew 16:4] This case was an indirect foreshadowing.
B. Why concrete teaching was possible
Jesus wanted to clearly reveal the redemptive work of the gospel to his disciples, but there was no religious opportunity to do so. But now, in the region of Caesarea Philippi, through the lips of the disciples, they had matured, that is, they found the faith to build the church and entrust the keys to the kingdom of heaven, and then they came to clearly teach that they would be killed and resurrected on the third day.
Jesus was doing ahead of Paul's teaching that he could breastfeed a child and give an adult something hard. Today, the Lord will give you deep grace while waiting for the faith of the saints to mature.
C. The work of death and resurrection
There are many works that Jesus did when he came to this earth. He healed the sick, cast out demons, raised the dead, and performed various miracles. But that in itself was not the purpose of Jesus' earthly ministry. It was simply to gather people and open the door of their hearts so that they could discover the work of God and spread the message of the gospel. In particular, the culmination of Jesus' public life was His death on the cross and His resurrection by opening the tomb.
