(Matthew 3:1-12)
One of the most important figures in the life of Jesus was John the Baptist. John the Baptist was the son of Zechariah the priest and was born six months before Jesus. John the Baptist must inherit his father's surname, but an angel instructed him to name him John. Just as Jesus was called Jesus of Nazareth because he lived in the town of Nazareth, he was called John the Baptist because he baptized with water in the Jordan River in the wilderness of Judea. Although John the Baptist was the son of a priest, he served as a prophet. The prophet John the Baptist, who appeared 400 years after the prophet Malachi in the Old Testament, became a turning point between the sacrifices of the Old Testament and the worship of the New Testament. That is why Jesus said, “The law and the prophets were until the days of John” in Luke 16:16. what do you mean? The law given by Moses was until the time of John (John 1:17), and the age of the gospel of grace was opened by the coming of Jesus (John 1:17). It is a declaration that the time has come when the prophecies of the prophets are no longer needed because He has followed the prophecies.
