Title: Promise is life

Contents

20090719 The promise is life (Matthew 5:33-36)

James 5:12 Above all, my brethren, do not take an oath; do not swear by heaven or by earth or by anything else, but by your saying yes, not saying yes, not condemnation.

[al-la- hl;a; The verb [al-la-] is also translated as [oath] (Hos. 10:4) or [curse] (Judges 17:2, Hos 4:2). Strictly speaking, this word means [curse] and is a stronger form of an oath.

=====5:34

1. Society is a contractual relationship (Aristotle)

Every society is a relationship of promise.

Paychecks, insurance companies, business relationships But why did the Lord tell us not to make promises because of the sinful nature of society?

It's that a trustworthy society isn't good enough. Luke 18 The Unjust Judgment and the Unjust Widow

Adam and Eve's reservation was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil

2. Covenant with God

[Numbers 30:2] If a man has made a vow to the LORD, or has made an oath to control his heart, he shall not break it;

Even if Daniel said to pray 3 times a day into the lions' den, he did it because he said he would do it.

Daniel 6:10 And when Daniel knew that this decree had been signed, he went back to his house and went to Jerusalem in the room and from the open window he got down on his knees three times a day in prayer and gave thanks to God, just as he had done before.

King Saul's family collapsed because he broke his promise to God.

Same goes for Samson.

2. The Promise of Human Relations (Kant)

[Hos 10:4] They speak vain words, they swear falsely, and establish a covenant, and their judgments are like bitter stings from the furrows of a field.

It reminds me of something I read back when I was in elementary school. Someone committed a felony and was sentenced to death. There are three days left until the execution date, and I heard the news that my only sister was getting married. He is troubled, and asks to hold a close friend as a hostage instead of a prisoner. A friend persuades me to do this. And the prisoner is released. It's because of my sister's marriage. But now I can run away freely whenever I want. It was the day of the execution. The friend didn't come. Instead, your friend is taken to the execution site. How deceived and frustrated are you? An innocent friend had no choice but to die for a friend prisoner. Just as he was about to cut his throat with a knife in the execution room, a scorpion came rushing on a horse. Stop the death penalty. The prisoner is here. It's keeping the promise.

Kant presents a deontological view of ethics in his book The Critique of Practical Reason.

Kant opposes opinions (= utilitarianism) that suggest ethical judgments based on results, such as "Even if you go to Moro, just go to Seoul" and "If the end is good, everything is good." (German proverb). This is what Kant's universal ethical standards look like.

"Act in accordance with the maxim of your will and the general law."

Here, "maxim" means a principle that applies to individual human behavior, and "principle" means a principle that has a universal value and applies to all people, so this means: It means to act in such a way that there is no stumbling block.

The reason I was able to say this is because Kant is Platonism, which believes in the existence of the essence of goodness (the idea of goodness). will be.

Let’s take a look at some concrete examples of practice that Kant drew according to his argument.

① Do not commit suicide. ② Do not make false promises. ③ Strive for self-improvement. ④ Help others in need

3. Believe in the Gospel Promise

[Romans 1:2] This is the gospel, which God promised in advance through the prophets concerning his Son in the Scriptures.

Genesis 3:15 I will make you hostile to the woman, and your descendants to her offspring and enemies; and her offspring shall bruise you in the head, and you shall bruise her in the heel.

[Isa 7:14] Therefore the Lord Himself will give you as a sign: behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

[Matthew 1:23] Behold, a virgin will conceive and bear a son, and he will call his name Immanuel, which is translated, “God with us.”

Isaiah 53:5-6 He was pierced for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; His discipline gave us peace; His wounds made us healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way, and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

[Galatians 3:22] The scriptures have imprisoned all things under sin, that the promise through faith in Jesus Christ may be given to those who believe.

[Mark 16:16] Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

[Acts 2:39] This promise is to you and to your children and to all who are far away, to whom the Lord our God may call.

4. Trust your supervisor's promises

When the Olympics are held, the first place will be given 523 million won, 3rd place 100 million won, and other awards and crowns. If you don't believe it, no one will compete.

[James 1:12] Blessed is the one who endures temptation, for after being approved by this he will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

What was the last promise you made to us?

[1 John 2:25] And this is the promise he made to us, everlasting life.

[2 Peter 3:13] According to his promise, we look to new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.

The faithful promises of Jesus Christ do not change. We also bless you that we will keep our promises of life and live a life that leads to the glory of Jesus Christ.
