Psalm 61 is set in Absalom's rebellion, and Absalom first captured Jerusalem and soon took control of most of Israel. Then David crossed the Jordan River and escaped to Mahanaim, the easternmost end of the territory of Israel. At the end of the promised land (Israel territory) called Mahanaim, you will hear the news. What news do you hear? He hears that his son Absalom is now planning to launch an all-out attack on Mahanaim, where his father is taking refuge, uprooting them, and trying to take full control of Israel. At this time, today's psalm is the song sang in the last desperate crisis when the royal palace was taken away, the country was taken away, and life would come to an end.
What was David's prayer in this crisis situation?
1. Help us to mature in our faith. (Verses 1-2)
As I said at the end of the earth, the fact that I went to Mahanaim was just like the government was pushed back on the 25th of June and went all the way to Busan under the Nakdong River. Symbolically, they have been completely destroyed as a human being and are standing on the edge of a cliff, and now they have no choice but to fall off a cliff with just one step forward. It's been pushed to the brink. In this desperate situation, David earnestly cries out and prays.
Why is it called 'rock'? Now, on this level of trouble where Absalom rebelled and turned the country upside down, let me calm this floor and overcome this crisis, and I can completely bring back all the problems that are happening in this floor right now. Instead of praying, “Give me strength to do this,” I say, “Please guide me higher from this floor where the chaos where this trouble is unfolding.”
2. Help me keep my promise to you (verse 5)
At this time, the memory of the vow came to David's heart. What is a vow? A vow is an oath to God, making a wish and making it come true. David sees God closer and anew from a higher place in the midst of prayer. That's when I started thinking, 'Oh, I want to do something for this God.' Now David is not in a position to do anything for God. you got kicked out We have lost our country and are in danger of losing our kingship. However, through the death of the self, we go up one more level. As we go up, we meet God anew, and suddenly, in my heart, ‘Oh, God, what do I want to do for God…’ A heart like this arose.
3. May you be pleasing to the Lord (verse 8).
Every day, I climb a rock higher than myself, fall in the charm of God, and do it for God. So, to put it in the words of the Apostle Paul, it is as if we died, but we want to be alive or to please you.
Why do you say that? Why do you want to be the one who pleases the Lord? When I met the Lord, I fell in love with the Lord. ‘No, is there anyone who is this wonderful and lovely? Can I give you something?’ That’s how I feel. So, this kind of relationship between God and David is now established.
When David encountered a problem that he could not possibly solve on his own, he did not try to solve the problem, but instead took the opportunity to take another risk and ascend to a higher place. He called me near the cliff and approached me. He told me to come closer to the edge of the cliff, so I got closer. Then, as I stood with my feet on the cliff, he stopped pushing me down the cliff.
‘Oh my God, how can this be!’ For a moment, I thought, ‘This is the end!’ As I fell constantly down the cliff, I thought a lot. But it was only then that I realized that I had wings on my back and that I could fly.
