Title: Remember Me

The main text 1 Corinthians 11:23-34
Preacher Se-won Oh
Sermon Date 2007-10-07
23 What I have delivered to you is from the Lord, and on the night the Lord Jesus was arrested, he took bread,
24 After giving thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body for you; do this in remembrance of me."
25 After supper, he also took the cup likewise, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."
26 Whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
27 Therefore whoever eats or drinks the bread or the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner is sinning against the body and blood of the Lord.
28 A man shall examine himself, and after that he shall eat of this bread and drink of this cup.
29 Whoever eats and drinks without discerning the body of the Lord eats and drinks in his own sin.
30 Therefore many of you are weak and sick, and many are sleeping.
31 If we had examined us, we would not be judged.
32 When we are judged, the Lord disciplines us, that we may not be condemned with the world.
33 Wherefore, my brethren, wait for one another when we gather to eat.
34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that your assembly will not become a meeting of judgment.

Title: Celebrate Me
He establishes ordinances and commands all his followers to observe them regularly. Among those who have become the greatest men of mankind, who have ever made the greatest contribution to mankind, who, in his honor, earnestly and hastily demanded that his name, his character, and his deeds be preserved and perpetuated forever. Have you ever asked to celebrate yourself through all the ages to come?
In today's verse, Jesus said, "Remember me." You said 'remember me', but what specifically do you want to commemorate? What was the case when you spoke of remembrance? As we well know, the sacrament we observe today was ordained by the Lord himself while he was alive. Before Jesus died on the cross, he met his disciples on the Passover and had the last Passover meal. At that time, he himself took the bread and, after praying for blessing, broke it and gave it to each person, saying, “This is my body for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then, after taking the wine again, he gave it the same way, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this in remembrance of me whenever you drink it.
Doing this is to commemorate what the Lord's death is. Verse 26 says, “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
The Eucharist thus instituted is an ordinance of remembrance, witness, and communion, and nothing else. Luxurious ceremonies are not prepared. Even the attitude is not stipulated. It is simply a rule to provide bread and wine. There are no rules other than taking, taking off, eating and drinking. However, spiritual behavior is specially stipulated. It should be a remembrance of our Lord. Otherwise, our sacramental ordinances will fail.
No matter how many memorable events in our lives, no matter how beautiful and memorable there are, even those that move us, we must remember him first, knowing that the sacrament was prepared for his honor. do.
The sacrament is beneficial for one holy remembrance.
The bread and wine now set on the sacrament table are symbols that show the person of our Lord as a true man who has the actual body and blood of Christ.
Me and you, who are sitting to partake of this holy sacrament, signify an intimate communion with the Lord and our drawing near to Him.
A little later, when I personally break the bread and pour in the wine, it symbolizes His suffering.
When we partake of the bread and wine, we demonstrate the life-preserving power of Jesus and receive Him into our deepest self.
Each holy object in the Eucharist points to Jesus, and there we must see the Lamb of God.
That holy remembrance is by nature most needed for us.
It is necessary to commemorate our Lord who died on the cross. Because it keeps the faith constant.
Because it inspires love.
Because it is the source of hope.
For it has the effect of separating us from the world, from the self, from arguments, from toil, from our fellows, and leading us to the Lord.
Also, because it is like a wake-up signal that wakes us up from sleep.
It is a prelude to the wedding banquet, making us look forward to the ‘wedding feast in heaven.
First of all, it stimulates us to engrave the name of our Lord in our hearts.
However, we should note one thing. No matter how holy it may be, no matter how beneficial it may be to us, participating in the ordinance requires an attitude appropriate to the ordinance.
In fact, the sacrament is not for everyone, but only for those who can discern the body of the Lord spiritually. It was not given for the conversion of sinners, but for the education of the disciples. We must, therefore, be careful not to interfere in vain in things we do not have a right to by taking good care of ourselves.
Verse 27 teaches that anyone who eats or drinks the bread or cup of the Lord is sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. The next verse is verse 28, "A man must examine himself and then eat this bread and drink this cup. Verses 27-29 are missing from the synoptic gospels, namely, the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In other words, it is an additional message given through Paul because of a problem with the sacrament in the early church. Because the original meaning of the Lord's Supper could not be preserved and changed, God gave a new word in order to keep this meaning better and better keep it.
In order not to eat unworthy and sin, we must examine ourselves. So what should we look for?
I need to see if I am worthy to eat and drink.
Do you know what your responsibilities are?
Do we attend with a solemn heart and come to the table with caution? He has to look into his heart, and therefore be able to come to the table with humility.
Do we come forward with appropriate confidence and joy? Only after examining will you know if you are worthy to come forward and whether you are comfortable with it.
Chrysostom, the early church father, said that eating and drinking the sacrament without repentance was eating and drinking unworthily, Bengel said that eating and drinking without introspection was eating and drinking, and Al Ford said, “Eating and drinking without a proper understanding or faith in the death of the Lord.” interpreted
What we must know is that Judas Iscariot also took the place of the sacrament. Matthew 26:21 says, “One of you will betray me.” Matthew 26:23 says, “He who puts his hand into the vessel with me will betray me.” Matthew 26:24 “Woe to that man, it would have been better for me if he had not been born.” He was Judas Iscariot. Seeing this, we must not forget the teaching that we should eat and drink after taking good care of ourselves.
Philip Henry recommends taking time for self-examination by asking three questions before partaking of the sacrament. 1) Who am I? 2) What did I do? 3) What do I want?
If you participate in this series of attitudes, your participation in the Lord's Supper should be a place of joy, joy, and thanksgiving. Dare to participate in the cross of the Lord means resurrection, and resurrection means eternal life. Today is 'World Communion Sunday', which is especially observed by churches around the world. It is a very meaningful week. Therefore, if we obey and participate in the words of 'remember me', the Lord's crucifixion must be revealed through this sacrament we participate in. That way, the meaning of commemoration comes alive. When this meaning is revealed, Christ and I become one and have eternal life.
John 6:53-54 "Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life." and I will raise him up on the last day; my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. He who eats your flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.”
Today we are invited to this sacrament. Therefore, through this sacrament meeting, I hope that the crucifixion of the Lord will be revealed and the work of making us new will occur.
