Church of Pergamum Revelation 2:12-17
We would like to take a look at the church of Pergamum, the third church among the letters that the Lord sent to the 7 churches in Asia Minor that existed in the first century.
1. The Lord's Appearance to the Pergamum Church
In verse 12 of the text, the Lord speaking to this church is described as “the One who has a double-edged sword.” In the Bible, the two-edged sword is used to signify the word of God or the judgment of God.
2. The Lord's Praise for the Pergamum Church
Verse 13 says, “You held fast to my name, and you did not forsake your faith in me, even when Antipas, my faithful witness, was slain among you, in the dwelling place of Satan.” Fortunately, the church in Pergamum had faithful Witnesses like Antipas. One day his disciple said this to a famous preacher and father of an early church named Chrysostom among the church fathers. "Sir, the whole world is against us. Maybe it's good?" Then Chrysostom said this famous saying: "Well, then, shouldn't we oppose the whole world?" As the Lord said, "You must not be conformed to this generation," it is a time to miss people like Antipas who were able to confront the world in order to keep this faith. May we all become Andiva.
3. The Lord's Rebuke to the Pergamum Church
The revuke recorded in verses 14-15 can be summed up in two ways. One is that there were those who kept the doctrine of Balaam, and the other was that there were those who kept the doctrine of the Nicolaitans.
Council to the Church of Pergamum
The defilement and corruption of the Church of Pergamum is because they did not have a holy fear of God, so he tells them to repent. And the Lord promises. The Lord promises the victors of the faith who keep their faith in the midst of this great wave of secularization and confess with their body and heart the Lordship of Christ. So, what is the vision of a healthy church that we should learn from this Pergamum church? In short, it is a church that keeps the faith. The greatest wealth of the church is that of faith in Jesus Christ.
