The 'righteousness of God' in verse 17 refers to the right relationship between God and human beings after the fall of man and separation from God. In other words, it means that human beings who have no choice but to die have obtained the qualifications to become children of God. It is the doctrine that this great event is possible through faith in Jesus.
Martin Luther was captivated by these words and the Reformation took place.
