Title: Righteousness by Faith/Romans 3
Righteousness by Faith
Romans 3
1. Answers to the slander of the Jews (1-8)
Paul, who pointed out all the sins of the Jews in the previous section, offers an apologetic for some slander that will be raised from the Jews in the text.
① What are the advantages of Jews?
Paul had already concluded that both Jews and Gentiles were in sin and under the wrath of God. Then, the question is what makes the Jews, the chosen people, better than the Gentiles? What was the reason for giving the law and giving circumcision? It was not given by the Jews, but by God's choice and plan. Therefore, the privilege of the Jews is nothing to boast about.
② Can Jewish unbelief invalidate God's faithfulness?
If the prerogatives of the faithless Jews are nothing, then the question is whether the faithfulness of God is nullified by the unbelief of the Jews. This is just a matter of man's unfaithfulness to the covenant, and God is always faithful.
③ Do the Jews' unrighteousness reveal God's righteousness?
The logic is that if God's righteousness is revealed through human injustice, the Jews should not be judged. This is a judgment because God is truly righteous, and not the righteousness of God through their unrighteousness.
2. The sins of all mankind (9-20)
① Human Reality (9)
Both Jews and Gentiles are under sin.
② Man and Sin in the Old Testament (10-18)
There is none righteous, not even one.
③ The Law and the Problem of Sin (19-20)
The law does not solve the problem of human sin.
Only the law convicts of sin.
3. God's impartial revealed on the cross (21-31)
① The righteousness of God (21-
Man has been separated from God through sin, and although he recognizes his sin through the law given by grace, he does not reach God. Now, a way has been prepared by God's righteousness, which is righteousness through faith in Jesus Christ.
② The Redemption Event of Jesus Christ
He sent Jesus Christ, the Son of God, to this earth to be crucified for us as a ransom sacrifice and a propitiation sacrifice, and opened the way for redemption.
③ Law and Faith
Man's salvation comes through faith. So, is the law worthless?
No. Faith establishes the law.
