Title: Romans 5:12-21 Adam and Christ

Romans 5:12-21 Adam and Christ Topic: 11. Salvation. 2012. 5. 13.

Introduction

: How did sin and death enter the world? How Christ reversed this is a good representation of two focal points of history.

1. Sin and death entered through Adam. (12-14)

1) Sin and death entered the world through one man and reached all men. (12)

Adam died because he sinned and fell. (Genesis 2:17; Ezekiel 18:4; 20)

2) Adam's sinfulness and death existed in the past and are still being passed down to all people. (12)

Adam's fallen nature has been passed down to his descendants,

It has been passed down to all people throughout history. (12)

Point: Humans are not condemned to death because of Adam's sin.

It caused everyone to die because everyone had sinned.

3) The evidence of inheriting Adam's disposition was that sin and death existed before the Law. (13)

Before the law was given to Moses in the written form, it made humans to sin and die.

However, before the law, there was no accusation of sin by the law.

The people between Adam and Moses were human nature, that is, sinful and fallen human nature.

Adam was the first human to be punished by death because he sinned and corrupted.

4) Adam is a symbol of the one who is to come (Jesus Christ). (14)

Adam and Christ are the two turning points in human history and are the representatives or heads of mankind. (1 Corinthians 15:20-28, 45-49)

Adam was the first man who brought sin and death to mankind as the ancestor of mankind. (Isa 43:27)

Christ is ① the first man who achieved perfect life and righteousness, ② the first man who conquered death (resurrection).

Sin is the most serious and dreadful thing that opposes God. Why does sin bring punishment?

① Sin is disobedience to God and rebellion against God.

② Sin caused God to make the Son of God the greatest sacrifice.

Physical, spiritual, and eternal death, which is universal. That is, everyone dies. (Heb 9:27)

2. Sin and death were reversed by Christ. (15~18)

Christ made it possible for man to live righteously and conquer death.

1) Sin entered the world through Adam's transgression, but God gave righteousness as a gift. (15)

God did far more than Adam did to overthrow those evil works

① God has poured out grace, that is, his great grace, care, and love on mankind.

② God made it possible for everyone to receive the gift (righteousness) of God.

God's grace and gifts are “abundant” and overflows to everyone. It comes from the only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

2) Adam was condemned for his sin, but God gave him righteousness as a gift. (16)

Although he was judged for Adam's sin, God's gift is so glorious that it touches mankind.

① God’s gift forgives “many” sins as well as Adam’s sin and condemnation.

② Things we inherited from our ancestors (Adam).

③ Things that are committed and caused by our own sinful deeds.

3) The power of death ruled the world through Adam's sin, but God gave the power of life as a gift. (17)

The phrase “he shall reign in life” means eternal life and reign. But the source of righteousness is Jesus Christ.

4) All people were condemned for the sin of one man, Adam, but God gave the righteousness of life as a gift.(18)

① “Just as by one transgression (Adam) many came to condemnation”

② “Through one righteous deed (Jesus Christ”), many were justified to life.”

(Romans 6:23; 8:32; 2 Corinthians 9:15; Ephesians 2:8)

3. Conclusion. (19-21)

This is the most instructive and shocking part of the entire Bible.

1) Adam's disobedience made many (all men, v. 12) sinners,

Christ's obedience made many righteous. (19)

Jesus Christ was perfectly righteous, and he assuredly guarantees the ideal of righteousness.

Faith to trust Jesus Christ, faith to actually entrust his life to Christ,

He must have the kind of faith that entrusts his whole being and all that he has to Christ and His care.

(Heb 2:10; 5:9; 7:25-26)

2) The law was given to point out and reveal sin, but God's grace is far greater than this. (20)

① The law was given to point out and reveal sin.

② The law was given to make man more aware of sin.

③ The law was given to give man more knowledge of sin.

④ The law was given to give more understanding of sin.

⑤ The law was given in order to more strongly inform and recognize the reality of sin.

⑥ The law was given to make people more responsible for their sins.

3) Sin reigns in death, but the grace of God brings the righteousness of Christ to eternal life. (21)

① Because of Adam, sin reigns and triumphs, takes power and brings death

② Through God, grace reigns and triumphs and takes power and brings it to eternal life.

Eternal life comes only through the righteousness of “our Lord Jesus Christ”.
