47 The Blessing of Peace with God
“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:1).
① “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith” (1a), what blessings are given?
㉠ Before entering the main body, it is necessary to summarize what has been said so far. Because the first verse begins with “therefore” (1a). “Therefore” is a conjunction that receives what has been said so far. Therefore, if you do not know this “therefore,” you cannot proceed further. Let's put it in the form of a question. Please check each one.
㉮ What would you say if you could sum up the gospel in one word? “In the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed” (1:17, 3:21). How is the news that “the righteousness of God has been revealed” become the gospel?
㉯ because “there is no body by which to be justified before him by the works of the law” (3:20). Why did “the righteousness of God” have to be revealed?
㉰ “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (3:23).
㉱ How can we receive the revealed “righteousness of God”? He said, “through faith in Jesus Christ” (3:22).
㉲ How did it become possible for the “righteousness of God” to be revealed? “Through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus” (3:24), it became possible.
㉡ In this way, we have become “justified freely by the grace of God.”
② Then, what are the blessings given to those who have been justified?
㉠ The apostle first says, “Let us enjoy peace with God.” “Peace” here does not mean the peace of mind that God gives us. Of course, that also comes with that, but the first blessing is that we have achieved reconciliation in our relationship with God.
㉡ Previously, it was a discordant relationship, a separate state, a hostile relationship, and was under wrath. But now that we have been justified, we have “peace with God.” How did this become possible?
③ “Through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Part 1), it says that it was made possible.
㉡ It is not just Jesus. “Our Lord Jesus Christ.” “Jesus and Christ” cannot be separated. The early saints risked their lives to testify that “Jesus, whom you crucified, is the Christ.” A better name would be “Our Lord Jesus Christ.”
㉢ and says “because of”. All the blessings that come to us are connected “by way” of this. Verse 2 also says, “And through him”. Verse 11 says, “Through our Lord Jesus Christ”. Those who have been justified have “peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
㉮ Verse 20, “Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, and on behalf of Christ, as God is admonishing you, we beseech you to be reconciled to God.” “You are to be reconciled to God,” this is the urgent consent that every Christian, no matter who he is, must hold onto and convey first.
㉯ What separates us from God? “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God” (Isaiah 59:2). Because of sin, there was a discord between God and man.
㉰ Then how did God deal with our “sin”? See verse 19. “He did not hold our sins on them,” he says. He said that He did not hold “our sins, my sins” on me. So, how did you deal with my sins?
㉱ 21 says, “God made him who knew no sin to be sin for us.”
㉲ However, this is not all that our sins have been resolved. Verse 21 goes on to say, “that we might become the “righteousness of God” in him. That is, we have been justified. God, who “made him who knew no sin to be sin for us,” justified us who did not know righteousness.
㉳ 18 says, “All things are of God.” That's right. All of this is a gift that God has solved.
㉴ Verse 20 says, “I beg you, be reconciled to God.” The principle of the human world is to pay damages on the part of the perpetrator, ask for forgiveness, and seek reconciliation. However, the gospel is that after God, who had been betrayed, made his son bear our sins in his place, he pleads, “It is all settled, let’s be reconciled to me.”
㉡ The above meaning is the truth contained in the words, “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1).
⑤ Pay attention to the end of verse 1 of the main text. It says, “Let us enjoy peace with God.”
㉡ Brother, don't you just know? Don't you just believe? I hope you enjoy it from today. “I have been reconciled to God. God has become my father, and I have become a child of God.” I hope you enjoy this.
㉢ If you do, say, “Oh, thank you, Father. Since God is my Father, no matter what the circumstances or circumstances, I am happy, joyful, and happy.” You will be grateful for everything. I bless you in the name of the Lord that you may hold on to these words and enjoy this joy and happiness at home and at work, not only today, but also tomorrow, and for the rest of your life, until you meet God our Father.
Let's meditate.
1. What is the first blessing that those who are justified by faith will enjoy?
2. How did this become possible?
3. Do I just need to know? Can I just believe it?
