Title: Savior Jesus Christ/Mark 5:1-20
Contents Savior Jesus Christ/Mark 5:1-20
Key Verse: “For Jesus had already said to him, Come out of the man, you unclean spirit” (verse 8).
Word: The content of this text records the ‘how he dealt with the demon-possessed man’ who went to the land of the Gerasenes by boat. The Gospel of Mark deals with many stories about demons (1:23-27,32-34,39). “Even unclean spirits whenever they see Jesus fall down before him and cry out, saying, ‘You are the Son of God’” (3:11). Jesus was also accused of being powered by Beelzebul (the king of demons) because of his exorcism (3:22), and when he sent out his disciples, he gave them the authority to cast out demons (6:6,13). Even after His resurrection, He commanded His disciples to cast out demons (16:17).
First, let's meet the demon-possessed Gerasain (5:2-12). Ghosts are very cruel and powerful, and they are also evil beings. The demon-possessed Gerasain in the text was also in an unhappy and miserable state. He dwelt among the tombs, and the chains could not control him. The evil spirit tormented him so much that he screamed day and night and cut himself with stones. What the saints should do is to watch and pray spiritually so that the devil does not enter my heart and my home.
Second, let's meet Jesus who cast out demons (5:6-13). Jesus' authority and authority over demons was truly perfect. The demon recognized Jesus even when he was far away. And he knew that he had the power to drive him out. So he asked to enter the herd of pigs. No matter how cunning the devil may be and as strong as a roaring lion, he cannot match the power of Jesus, the Son of God. No matter how many demons there are, they cannot be compared with the power of Christ, who commands the angels to move them. A Christian who walks with the Lord has no reason to fear the devil. We too can cast out demons in the name of Jesus.
Third, let's meet people who tell Jesus to leave the town (5:11-20). This scene is full of sadness. It shows how inhuman a person can be. A poor life, who had been captured by the power of a demon and brought to ruin, was more concerned that their interests (the death of a herd of pigs) had been violated, rather than thanking Jesus for helping them to become healthy. They cared more about possessions than people. They rejected Jesus for worldly wealth. The Geraseans loved the world and committed the folly of casting out Jesus, the Lord of life. Even today, in the age of material civilization, these kinds of things are happening everywhere. A Christian is a person who knows what is more valuable and practices it.
Prayer: May you always walk with Jesus Christ, your savior, and win. I pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
