seeing and feeling
Luke 24:28-35
Going through public school, I was always running in middle and high school, and the moment I entered the Jeongneung alley, but the alley where the family was located, my heart was suffocated. No, when did it get so narrow? Nothing has changed since 30 years ago. The old hanok and the densely packed houses made me feel as if I had stepped back in time. 30 years have passed and people have deep wrinkles, but the surrounding environment seems to have stopped. I had no idea that the difference between 'seeing' and 'feeling' would be so huge.
The plot of the text is that Clopas and two of his friends left for Jerusalem and met the risen Lord on the way down to Emmaus, and returned to Jerusalem. As for why only two of the disciples left Jerusalem and went down to Emmaus while the other disciples remained in Jerusalem, Osutese said, "It is not only because Jesus' death ended in shame, but because there was no hope of salvation through him." However, leaving Jerusalem and going down to Emmaus is not desirable because it is the result of frustration.
Two disciples on their way to Emmaus meet an unfamiliar companion. Then, they arrive at Emmaus with him and share food. But the heart of today's story happened after we broke up. The text describes what happened after we broke up with Jesus.
1. My eyes were opened and I knew it was Jesus.
When the two disciples on their way to Emmaus did not recognize the Lord, they posted it by their side, revealing that you were Jesus and the risen Christ. Once their eyes were opened, they realized it. Jesus was not with them.
Before the meal, Jesus appeared to be a stranger. Also, their eyes did not suddenly open. When they were taught, their hearts were touched. Therefore, they accepted Jesus' teachings with enthusiasm, and their willingness to treat strangers made them to recognize Jesus (31).
When you take your children to the zoo or where there are rides, they will scream and love it. But the grown-ups just stare blankly. Why? Because it's something you already know. So, children should be educated in an object-oriented way, but there is no need to draw elephants or show lions to adults. As soon as the eyes of the two disciples were opened and they recognized, Jesus left to awaken the other disciples who were drowning in doubt. Therefore, we should focus on the fact that 'they had their eyes opened'.
The eyes of the soul are darkened by sin. Once the darkened eyes are wiped clean with the 'faith towel'. Only then can we see God's eternity and heaven.
- When man sinned and turned away from God, several things changed.
(1) The purpose of work has changed.
It worked even before the fall. However, they did not work to make a living. However, after the fall, they must work hard to earn a living.
(2) Living became painful.
Before I sinned, I looked to God and looked at the beauty, but after the fall, I lived looking at 'shame', 'desperation' and 'sin'.
When Adam and Eve appeared in Genesis 3, their eyes were opened and they saw shame about their nakedness, but the two disciples in the text saw the risen Jesus when their eyes were opened. The expression 'brightening' is the same, but the result is as big as the difference between the sky and the earth. Adam and Eve mean that the eyes of the soul were closed and the eyes of the body were opened, and that the two disciples on their way to Emmaus had their eyes of unbelief closed and their eyes of faith opened.
Numbers 20 records the complaints of the Israelites. “In this wilderness there is no land to sow, no figs, no grapes, no pomegranates, and no water.” But Moses, who had eyes of faith, saw the same wilderness, water, manna and quail.
- What kind of eyes are the lucky ones? -
The eyes that see God, the eyes that see the truth, the eyes that see justice, the eyes that see love, the eyes that see the strengths of brothers, and the eyes that see the risen Lord, the Lord who is beside me are blessed eyes.
- Blessings of those who see righteously -
(1) Jesus came to see those who cannot see (John 9:39).
(2) Only those who are pure in heart can see God (Matthew 5:8).
(3) Anyone who sees and believes in the Son can have eternal life (John 6:40).
(4) You will see and know the Lord fully in heaven (1 Corinthians 13:12).
2. My heart warmed (32)
When God created man, he created man as a being that must love and can be loved, a being who is full of warm affection, a being that is moved by emotion, a realization, and an action. My heart started to cool.
As soon as they know that the stranger was Jesus, Jesus disappears, and the two are reliving the burning memories of their hearts as they recall the emotions they felt while walking. It was because of the teachings that Jesus had given them that their hearts were warmly touched.
Especially when 'the Bible was interpreted' (32, 7), their hearts burned with fire. Of the two, not only one of them was like that, but both of them had a warm heart. That's why it's said 'in our hearts'. In the end, we come to realize that it is only through the Word that we can meet Jesus.
'Isn't it hot' is a metaphorical expression of a certain mental impulse, and it is not a general change of mind, but a transcendent experience that senses a certain attraction from the outside and experiences thrilling joy and ecstasy.
The Bible is there. Therefore, in order to know the meaning of the Bible, you must have a heart that can receive the revelation of the Holy Spirit. Just as the two disciples saw Christ when they became passionate, that is, open hearts, today we too can realize the fact of the presence of the risen Jesus only through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
- The reason why the hearts of the two disciples became hot -
If only the two of them had continued to walk the twilight path, their hearts would have gotten colder and stiffer. But because I met the Lord, I was able to experience the miracle of melting my frozen heart.
"My father suddenly opened his eyes when the last minute was near and looked around the people in the room. They were angry. It was scary to see them. And he seemed to be pointing with his left hand. "
Death without Jesus is a death that is fearful and trembling.
After several years in Africa, Livingston returned to Oxford to receive an honorary doctorate. And with one arm that had been maimed by a lion attack in Apraki, he preached the experience of the Black Continent with his arm hanging down his side.
"Students! I will tell you the secret of how I was able to sustain myself. The words that sustained me were the promise of Jesus, who said, "I will always be with you, even to the end of the world."
Yes, only those who believe and trust Jesus' promises and God's promises can receive glory. The twilight road down to Emmaus is a lonely and painful road even for ten million people to walk.
(2) Because they have heard the Word.
The word of the Lord has both control and guidance at the same time. In other words, when they make a mistake, they scold, beat, and block. On the other hand, it illuminates and shows the way to go. The important thing is that 異變 occurs in the life of those who hear the word of the Lord.
In Acts 8, when Cornelius and his family and friends were listening to Peter's words, something strange happened. The hearts of all who listened to the Word were warmed and the Holy Spirit descended.
The word of the Lord gives us hope, comfort, and light. It gives strength to the weak. It shows sinners the way of salvation. And it melts the frozen soul, sets it on fire and makes it hot.
At one school, all fences in the school grounds were demolished for restraining children's behavior. However, after the fence was removed, a strange phenomenon occurred. As if a playground was narrow when there was a fence, children who had been running around were gathered in the middle of the playground to play quietly. The experiment revealed that for children, fences provide stability, not restraint.
There are people who want to be free from God. In other words, they are the people who want to demolish the fence and make a living. But we need a fence for the Word. We need a fence for interference and control.
If the word had not come to the two disciples on their way down to Emmaus, their souls would have grown cold. Heating up, they immediately returned to Jerusalem. And about the Jesus they met on their way, they talked out loud about their experiences that became hot again.
The two disciples, who went down to Emmaus in despair, experienced only one heat, and their people changed, their workplaces changed, and their lives changed. Only people who are hot can make history, the world, and the church hot.
