Son of God / Romans 8:8-17
(Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. If the Spirit of God dwells in you, you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Christ; and if Christ is in you, the body is not. For though you are dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. Therefore, brothers, we As debtors, do not owe the flesh to live according to the flesh. If you live according to the flesh, you will surely die; but if you put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit, you will live. All those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. We have not received the Spirit of righteousness, but have received the Spirit of adoption, so we cry, Abba, Father. The Holy Spirit Himself goes with our spirit.
We testify that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, for we must suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him) (Romans 8:8-17)
There is a hymn called 'Good God' that is sung well in our gospel hymns.
"Good God, good God, so good my God!" It is called.
Do you really believe in God as a 'good God'?
And do you believe that the good God is my God?
In order for God to be a 'good God' to me, you must taste and know the goodness of God and His mercy.
In order to taste the goodness of God and the mercy of God, there are things that we must first confirm.
Is it really that I am a child of God? is to do
Guys, do you think that I am a child of God?
I. On what basis do you think I am a child of God?
It should be clear.
In John 1:12, Jesus said, “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. "He said.
Those who receive him and believe in his name are children of God.
However, it is said that these people were not born of human blood or of the will of man, but only of God.
Who are God's children?
He said that those who received Jesus Christ in their hearts, that is, those who believed in Jesus, were given the privilege of being a child of God.
Those who accept Jesus become children of God, so am I a child of God? or not?
How can you check?
There is a way to check that.
1 Corinthians 12:3 says, “Therefore, I say to you, no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.”
You can understand better if you read the co-translation.
"No one who speaks by the Holy Spirit of God can curse Jesus, saying, Cursed, and no one can confess, "Jesus is Lord, except under the guidance of the Holy Spirit."
What does this mean?
Those who are led by the Spirit of God cannot curse Jesus, and they cannot confess Jesus as my Lord without the Holy Spirit.
So, who am I?
Can you curse Jesus? There will never be.
Then I must be convinced that I am a child of God.
If I am a child of God, I can now call God my Father.
☞ If you look at the classification of people in evangelism these days, it is like this.
① A person who goes to church,
② Those who do not know neither Jesus nor the Church;
③ Those who believe in Jesus,
④ People who believe in Jesus and go to church but do not have the Spirit of Jesus are classified.
The most problematic category here is the fourth category.
They say they believe in Jesus and go to church, but they do not have the Spirit of Jesus.
Such a person has the form of faith, but does not have the work of the Holy Spirit.
Verse 9 says, "If the Spirit of God dwells in you, you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit. If anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not of Christ."
If you do not have the Spirit of God, that is, the Spirit of Christ, you are not a person of Christ.
If you are not a man of Christ, you cannot be a child of God, and it is strange to call God Father.
Today's text, Romans, is a letter from the Apostle Paul to the church in Rome.
In other words, the letter to those who attend the Roman Church is the Romans.
These words can be seen as a letter to a person who attends a church in Korea today.
How many people go to church in Korea?
Here we use the subjunctive 'if'.
The premise is that if you go to church, there may be people who do not have the Spirit of Christ in their hearts.
We are now in the chapel to worship.
This means that this cannot be the evidence that I become a child of God.
The evidence is elsewhere.
We must be able to proudly confess that Jesus Christ is our Lord.
Everyone who is being baptized today after being baptized!
You cannot be a child of God by being baptized.
Only those who are led by the Spirit of God can become children of God.
Let's follow along.
“Jesus is my master.
Jesus died on the cross for me and is the savior who atoned for my sins.
And he is the Son of God who was resurrected on the third day.”
You should be able to confess this.
Then you have the Holy Spirit in your heart.
Romans 10:9-10 says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. come," he said.
Now, if we are God's children, how should we call God?
'The holy, holy Creator, the omnipotent God who controls all things in the universe and provides for history!' It is not wrong to call it this way.
But how does God want us to call him?
Everyone!
Let's say I have one son and I'm trying to pass by without going crazy.
I'm sure I'll feel weird.
'Dad' to me, or 'Father!' It should be normal to call it that way.
So will God.
That's why the Lord also told you to pray like this, and said, "Our Father in heaven..."
Today we will read verses 14-15 together.
“All those who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God. You have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption, so we cry, Abba, Father.”
Abba here means father in Hebrew.
We have now received the spirit of adoption, not the spirit of slavery.
What is adoption?
They were not children when they were born.
However, through adoption, a new identity has been acquired.
As adopted children, we should often call God our Father.
When I was born, I was not a child of God.
It is said that by nature, they were the children of wrath.
However, the moment I accepted Jesus Christ as my master, I became a child of God.
We are no longer children of sin.
It has changed into the status of a child of God.
We are no longer subject to judgment.
You have no idea how precious this privilege is.
Adoption rights are very great.
All inheritance goes to him.
II. God's adoptees must be able to call God their Father. (verse 15)
Do you still feel distant when you call God Father?
If it is still awkward in my heart when I call God Father, it means that my relationship with God is also awkward.
It's still awkward when we call God our Father because we compare it to our physical father.
When we call God our Father, there are some similarities with our physical father, but we cannot identify God with our physical Father.
You have to be careful with this.
Everyone!
What is your relationship with your physical father now?
Most of the time it's good, but sometimes it's not.
If we sometimes associate the image of God as a physical father, there is a danger of distorting God.
You must be careful about this and receive healing from your physical father with the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, in order to fully understand God.
In my case, my father was the one who listened to me all.
As the youngest of two sons and two daughters, I was born as the son of an evangelist. The only things I saw, heard, and grew up were church and school life.
Looking back even now, how difficult must the life of a pioneer evangelist in rural areas must have been?
However, although he did not have material wealth, he grew up with plenty of love from his father.
My father hugged me and always called me like this.
"Our nibong, the true nibong, and our nibong, the dog nibong..."
In my hometown there were the Ujin and Jangseon rivers.
The things my father crossed with the deep water of the Ujin River on his back...
It was a poem I wrote myself on New Year's Day...
Confucius said that Mencius was reading Chinese verses...
So father to me! The title contains the image of the Father of infinite love.
Maybe that's why I haven't been a God afraid of all my life.
There are some of us who sometimes worship God with fear.
If the physical parents raised them too conditionally or strictly, there is a risk of understanding God's love conditionally.
In other words, in order to receive God's love, I must do more good things...
What must I do so that God will love me and bless me...
I think so.
God's love surpasses the love of carnal parents.
God's love is unconditional.
If you accept Jesus as your Lord.
God loves our being sons, not our works.
Because all our actions are imperfect.
III. The Son of God is without condemnation in the love of God. (Romans 8:1)
'Therefore, now there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus...'
Those who are in Jesus are those who are being led by the Spirit of Jesus.
Being the Son of God, there is no condemnation.
God the Father loves our very existence as sons, not only because our actions are good, but because our lives are all godly lives.
Even if he sometimes broke his father's heart and fell deeply into the world, he accepts and loves us as the son himself, just as he embraced and kissed his son and gave a feast.
Heavenly Father is a Father of eternal love who never forsakes us.
Therefore, the Son of God must live under the guidance of the Spirit of God.
Verse 14 says, “If you live according to the flesh, you will surely die; but if you put to death the deeds of the body by the Spirit, you will live.
God wants His children to be saved through Jesus Christ.
Those who live obediently according to the will of salvation are the children of God.
