Old Testament

1. The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

2. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.

3. But Jonah got up to escape the face of the LORD and went down to Joppa to flee to Tarshish, and just found a boat going to Tarshish. And he paid a wage to go with them to Tarshish to avoid the face of the LORD and got into the boat.

4. And the LORD sent a great wind over the sea, and a great storm broke out in the middle of the sea, and the boat was almost torn apart.

5. The sailors were afraid, and each called on his god, and threw the things in the boat into the sea to lighten it up. But Jonah went down to the bottom of the boat and lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

6. The captain went to him and said, "Sleep, what can you do? Get up and ask your God, for perhaps God will think of us so that we will not perish.

7. And they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots to find out from whom this calamity has come upon us." And immediately they cast lots, and the lot was cast for Jonah.

8. And the crowd said to him, "Please, tell us on whose behalf this calamity has come upon us.

9. And he answered, I am a Hebrew, and I fear the LORD, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land.

10. Because he told them that he was hiding from the face of the LORD, when the crowds knew it, they were very afraid and said, "Why did you do this?"

new testament

38. Peter said to him, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

39. This promise is made to you and to your children and to all who are far away, to whom the Lord our God may call.

40. And with many other words he confirmed and exhorted, saying, Be saved from this perverse generation.

41. Those who received the word were baptized, and that day the number of believers increased by three thousand

42. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.

sermon

Jonah didn't obey God's command to go to Nineveh and preach the word, but he got on a boat going in the opposite direction to Tarshish. He ran away because he did not want to hear the words of Nineveh, the enemy who tormented the Jews, and repent and be saved. However, God did not abandon him, but sent a storm on the way of Jonah. In the storm, Jonah receives precious things from God and is born again. What is God trying to give us through the storms of life?

1. Enlightenment: When Jonah was fleeing from the face of the Lord, a great storm broke out and the boat was almost torn, but it was not. Why? Is it because of the lack of God's power? no. God's storm is for enlightenment, not judgment. The storm was showing that God had not yet forsaken Jonah.

2. Life Goal: The sailors are afraid, each calling their gods and throwing things into the sea to lighten the boat. Jonah fell into a deep sleep at the bottom of the boat. The captain saw this

To him, they cry out, “What are you sleeping? Ask your God.” The storm awakens the sleeping soul to realize the mission. Life reveals itself and gives rise to goals.

3. Salvation: Jonah realizes that he is responsible for the storm and throws himself into the storm. He would have thought that he deserved death because he disobeyed God's will. But God prepared a great fish to swallow him alive and raise him to life on the third day. God sends the storm to save us.

Jonah eventually obeyed and went to the city of Nineveh to preach the gospel, and through his evangelism, the whole city believed and was saved. Jonah still does not understand why God is delivering wicked people like Nineveh, so he sits on the opposite hill and watches them and pleads with God. However, God, who saved him from the storm, smiles with a smile and extends his hand of salvation to those who are in the storm today.
