Title: Take Mine / John 16:7-15
take mine
John 16:7-15
To this day, we continue to speak about the Holy Spirit for the third week. The words so far have been the most basic words about the Holy Spirit. Because the Korean church does not know and teach these basics accurately, it causes a lot of confusion about the Holy Spirit. I hope that we can listen carefully, know it accurately, and have the right faith. (I think the sermon recording tapes so far have been prepared. If you want to purchase them, please purchase them.)
To summarize the contents of last week in one word, first, the Holy Spirit regenerates us. And the proof of being born again is the confession of Jesus as Lord. Second, the Holy Spirit is called the Comforter. The Comforter means "to call aside". The Holy Spirit is the one who calls us to Jesus and allows us to repent of our sins and confess that Jesus is Lord.
To summarize the above, the Holy Spirit regenerates us, causes us to repent, believes in and confesses Jesus as Lord, and enables us to be justified before God, and to call God our Father. This is the most basic work of the Holy Spirit. This is called the lyric of salvation, and it is only when the foundation of such faith is strong that one can lead a righteous life of faith.
basic knowledge
Today, we will listen to the words of Jesus related to the practical work of the Holy Spirit. Jesus asked his disciples who he thought he was. At that time, on behalf of the disciples, Peter confessed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Then Jesus praised Peter and said, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew 16:17).
That's right. As we talk about the Holy Spirit, we know that knowing, believing, and confessing that Jesus is Lord is entirely possible through the work of the Holy Spirit. These words of Jesus mean that the confession that I am Lord is not because of a teacher or friend of flesh, but because of the Spirit of God.
This verse could also be said: 'Since Peter acknowledged Jesus as Lord, he is clearly a person who has received the Holy Spirit, has been regenerated, and the Holy Spirit who has come to him will never leave, so it is clear that the Holy Spirit resides in him.'
However, the resurrected Jesus told his disciples, "Receive the Holy Spirit while breathing out" (John 20:22), and just before ascension, "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard from me." John baptized with water. but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 01:04-05).
Everyone! Are you not confused about something while listening to the above? It is said that the Holy Spirit, which has come upon us once, will not depart. What is the reason for saying to the disciples who had already received the Holy Spirit and confessed that Jesus was Lord, “Receive the Holy Spirit” and “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit”? Does the Holy Spirit go in and out of our hearts instead of dwelling in our hearts? That's right. The Holy Spirit came in and went out. Please listen carefully. We don't say that the Holy Spirit went in and out of us now, but it is said that the Holy Spirit came in and went out until the time of Jesus, that is, before Pentecost.
trinity
Last week, I briefly talked about the Triune God. The Triune Gods, namely, God the Father, Jesus the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, have different roles, different works, and different times of work. Usually, the Old Testament is regarded as the period of the work of God the Father, the Gospel Age is regarded as the period of the work of Jesus the Son, and the period of God the Holy Spirit's work from Jesus to the present. Then, in the Old Testament, that is, if there was no work of the Holy Spirit during the work of God the Father, this is not the case.
When Moses was building the Tent of Meeting, God said, "He gave Busarel full of the Spirit of God to build the Tent of Meeting with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and various talents" (Exodus 31:03). A judge named Samson refused to have a haircut, because when his hair was long, "God's spirit is with him, but when his hair is cut short, the god of God leaves and his strength weakens, and he is eventually captured by the Philistines." Judges 16:) Saul, who was anointed by Samuel, said, "I was greatly moved by the Holy Spirit of God" (1 Samuel 10:06-09). But when he sinned, the spirit of God left him, and an evil spirit entered him. David, who committed adultery with Bathsheba, prayed that the Holy Spirit would not depart, saying, "Do not take your Holy Spirit from me" (Psalm 51:11) when he prayed for repentance.
Likewise, in the Old Testament times, the Holy Spirit came to a certain person, and whether he committed a crime, or left him after completing his mission. Then what about the gospel age, that is, the time of Jesus? At this time, the Holy Spirit mainly works with Jesus. So, Jesus was “conceived by the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 01:20), and when he fasted and prayed for 40 days and overcame the temptation of the devil, he was “guided by the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 04:01). Even when Jesus was baptized, “the Holy Spirit came upon him like a dove” (Matthew 03:16), and Jesus said, “I cast out demons by the Spirit of God” (Matthew 12:28). . When he prayed earnestly in Gethsemase, he said, "The Holy Spirit, the messenger of God, strengthened him and helped him" (Luke 22:43). As such, in the Gospel Age, it is the Holy Spirit who mainly worked with Jesus.
When the age of Jesus ends, the age of the Holy Spirit's sole work will unfold. Jesus clearly said, "If I go, I will send him to you" (John 16:07). After Jesus ascended into heaven, the Holy Spirit came on the day of Pentecost, and that was after Acts 2. From this point on, the Holy Spirit who came does not leave. You are with us forever. So the whole work of the Holy Spirit unfolds. When you know the background of God's work well and approach the work of the Holy Spirit, you can understand the right Spirit and have the right faith. On the evening of the last day, Jesus spoke the most about the Holy Spirit while leaving a lesson like a will in Mark's upper room. The reason is that prior knowledge was needed to meet the coming age of the Holy Spirit. And he didn't say everything. The reason is, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now” (John 16:12). That's why he said only the very easy and most basic words.
Jesus' Spiritualism
What is the basic work of the Holy Spirit introduced by Jesus? The first is regeneration, and the second is the Counselor, the one who calls us to the side of Jesus. This part has already been said. Today I'm going to tell you another part.
First, the Holy Spirit "does not speak voluntarily, he speaks what he hears" (John 16:13). We have already said that the Holy Spirit leads us into the truth. That is to say, it leads us to Jesus, who is the truth. So, what does it mean to speak what you hear without speaking voluntarily? If you receive the Holy Spirit or be filled with the Holy Spirit, you will hear God's voice, see visions, receive revelations, and perform miracles just like the prophets of old. This is an illusion. Of course, delusion is freedom, but if this freedom is exercised incorrectly, a person like Jang-rim Lee will appear and deceive the world and cause controversy. Everyone! You must know clearly that the Holy Spirit never speaks of his own accord.
Not only the Holy Spirit, but also Jesus said, “He who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him I tell the world” (John 0826). In other words, Jesus did not speak voluntarily, he spoke what he heard from God. Therefore, the Holy Spirit does not speak voluntarily, but speaks what he hears from God.
As I said before, the work of the Holy Spirit has been around for a very long time. And some of his work did not speak voluntarily. Do you know what the results of that work are? Bible. It is said that all the Bibles were inspired by God, but the inspiration is the work of the Holy Spirit. Everyone! The Holy Spirit does not speak voluntarily. This is the one who left a record of what he heard from God and said nothing apart from the biblical principles he had written. In the Bible, “the day and hour no one knows” (Matthew 25:36) clearly speaks about the time of the Second Coming, and he never does anything that deviates from the Bible by telling his followers in other ways.
Second, he said, “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). The second work that the Holy Spirit will do is to teach the disciples and remind them of the words they heard from Jesus. When the Holy Spirit comes to us today, he teaches and reminds us of the Bible that recorded what Jesus said. Then, in order for the work of the Holy Spirit to occur actively in us, we must listen to, read, and learn the words of the Bible. Otherwise, even when the Holy Spirit comes, there will be no material to remind us. After we receive the Holy Spirit and are born again, the reason that the work of the Holy Spirit does not occur actively in us despite the certainty of His indwelling is because we do not have the Word. Because it doesn't offer a salute to remind you. Do you want to actively experience the work of the Holy Spirit? Read, listen, and study the Word. Then you will experience the filling of the Holy Spirit.
Third, what does the Holy Spirit ultimately remind us of, teach and know? The point of this verse is “take what is mine” (John 16:14.15). This word exists only in Jesus the Son, neither in God the Father nor in God the Holy Spirit, of course, there is something in Jesus the Son that people cannot even imagine. Taught it and said, "It's mine." It is the sacrifice that loved the world so much that he paid for all our sins by carrying the cross. The sacrifice and resurrection of the cross is unique to Jesus. The great work that truly loved you and me and gave you eternal life by being crucified on a high cross is exclusive to the Son Jesus alone in the entire universe.
Everyone! Many people think that receiving the Holy Spirit will bring about great events. Healing, performing miracles, speaking in tongues, prophesying, raising the dead, and so on. However, if you focus only on external things, you will not see the truth. Do you know what the truth is? The cross of Jesus. The Holy Spirit makes this known to us. The cross is a wonderful event. The cross is "the power of God" (1 Corinthians 01:18) to raise the dead. When you receive the Holy Spirit, your sick soul is healed. The soul is strengthened. When we receive the Holy Spirit, the miracle of becoming a child of God will occur as a hardened sinner repents. These are the greatest results that occur through the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes, "He will reveal my glory, because he will take what is mine and make it known to you" (John 16:14). Everyone! I hope you will discover and experience the saving power of the cross of Jesus in the Holy Spirit.
