Topic: The living abode of Jesus
Text: Isaiah 12:1-6, John 14:18-24
The expression 'the living God' appears throughout the Old and New Testaments (1 Samuel 17:26; 2 Kings 19:4; Jeremiah 10:10; Matthew 16:16; 26:63; Romans 9:26; Hebrews 3). :12). But Jesus called that God “the living Father.” It appears in the Sabbath debate (John 5:17,18). He also said ‘My Father is working still’. Among the four Gospels, the Gospel of John has a special emphasis (John 11:41; 12:27, 28; 17:1, 5, 11, 21, 24). The gist of the word is that this expression is not a spiritual imagination, but a spiritual reality. This is why it is mentioned the most in the “Prayer of the High Priest” (John 17). It becomes clearer in the passage where He speaks of the meaning of the Lord's Supper (John 6:47-57). Only when we know the true meaning of these words can we understand the true meaning of the New Testament text (John 14:18-24).
Today’s text, Darakbang Ganghwa, is according to the 6th declaration among the seven declarations of the Gospel of John, ‘It is the way, the truth, and the life’ (John 14:6). Words that the eleven disciples must have thought about as they listened continue (John 14:7-15). This is the continuation of the coming of the Holy Spirit and His work (John 14:16-17) as ‘another Comforter’. He fully understands the anxious hearts of the disciples at that time (John 14:1). It makes you think about the meaning of ‘yet a little while’ (19a). The world will not be able to see Jesus, and the disciples will see (cf. John 16:16). Along with the words reminiscent of the resurrection of Jesus, His disciples also said, “I will live.” The day of life that begins like that is called ‘that day’. It is a time that the disciples who have changed with the coming of the Holy Spirit will experience it.
In the Bible, the expression “that day” is an eschatological expression. The day of the eschatological expression refers to a state in which the quality of time and space has changed. It is in the same state as the ‘day’ of the Old Testament text (Isaiah 12:1-6) that sang the coming of the Messiah’s kingdom. God's wrath has ended, and comfort has begun. So the fear is gone, and I am determined to give thanks (verse 1). The song that follows (verses 2-6) is reminiscent of the amazing changes Jesus' disciples experienced with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Let us savor what the Lord said there at that time (verse 20). ‘In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you’. The three become one. It is a mysterious oneness. Jesus, Heavenly Father, and Jesus' people.
There is a task of a new dimension of life that has begun in this way. Keeping the commandments of Jesus. ‘He who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves me, and he who loves me will be loved by my Father. I will love him, and I will reveal myself to him” (verse 21). The Lord's answer (verses 23-24) to the question of Judas (verse 22), not the Iscariot, is also reminiscent of the parable of the true vine (John 15:9-12). The new commandment given by the Lord (John 13:34) is a condition for experiencing the presence of the living Jesus Christ among us. The place of life where Jesus Christ, who overcame the authority of death and ascended to heaven, lives, is the community that keeps the new commandment. Reverse people sometimes use it, but there is no holy communion. Let's not forget that the place of holy fellowship is the dwelling place of the living Jesus (John 14:23) (Matthew 18:20).
