Title: The Blessing of the Merciful
Blessings of the Merciful
Text/ Matthew 5:7
1. Introduction
Today, I would like to share grace while meditating on the fifth blessing among the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount, “the blessing of the merciful.” First, we will read the text in several translations.
*Blessed are the merciful, for they shall have mercy (KJV)
*Happy are those who show mercy. They will have mercy (Joint Translation)
*矜恤者福矣, 因其將見矜恤也
*Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy(NIV)
2. Text Interpretation
矜恤 (mercy = mercy = chesed = ereos): To be merciful means to be merciful, to be gracious, to have pity. If you look for words that are on a continuum with “compassion” in the Bible, it is as follows.
A life of compassion is at the heart of Christian truth. The supreme and supreme model of all these compassions is the crucifixion. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16). For God demonstrates his love for us in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 8:8). Christianity is based on this wonderful “mercy” of God.
3. Where does compassion come from?
first. Compassion comes from realizing the grace of God who saved a sinner like me. who am i I am the one who always takes the broad road. It is me who always lives around me. I am the one who always pursues only the things of the land that will perish. I am the one who lives in sin even though I always know that I am a sinner. I am always chasing after the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The result of such a life is hell.
My compassionate heart arises from deep understanding of the great and wonderful grace of God who washed me from my sins with the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross and gave me a chance to start over with justification.
second. Compassion comes from being compassionate. It comes from the attitude of life where I can identify myself (self-identification) with people in different circumstances. That's what Jesus was talking about in the parable of "the parable of the sheep and the goats." The sheep were those who united themselves with one of the least, and the goats were those who separated themselves from the least.
third. Compassion is developed and strengthened through training. I heard this story. On a cold winter's day, a Russian countess read a novel about the plight of the poor in Russia in a warm carriage and said, "How can this be! How could this be!” I sighed and wept. Arriving at the mansion, the Countess got out of the wagon and found that the poor driver had froze to death. Compassion is an action, not a thought. It is said, “He who has eaten meat knows the taste”, “It is familiar to the eye and stands in the hand”. In the Garden of Gethsemane, the disciples were “willing in spirit, but weak in spirit,” so they could not keep awake.
A compassionate life requires cultivating and cultivating a heart to be compassionate. It takes practice, it takes training, it takes learning. “If you love, you will know, and if you know you will see, but then things will not be the same as before.” We must learn to live a compassionate life. If you learn, you will know, and only if you know, you will be able to live a life of compassion.
4. Closing story
Heo Tae-young, an employee of the Basic Food Bank of Hanam City Hall Welfare Division, said: “Among the volunteers, those who have a mindset that I help the poor get off the rails after a short while. Those with a self-identification of the poor serve long. At first, I wanted to help the poor, but now I am learning so much from them.” I think this is the blessing that the merciful receive.
