A certain man heard what David had said and told it to Saul, so Saul called David.
David said to Saul, "Let no man be discouraged because of him, for your servant will go and fight that Philistine."
Saul said to David, "You cannot go and fight that Philistine, for you are a young man, and he has been a mighty man from his youth."
David said to Saul, "If your servant is guarding his father's sheep, and a lion or a bear comes and takes the young from the flock,
I followed and struck it and rescued the young from its mouth; and if it rose up to harm me, I took its beard and struck it to death.
Your servant has also struck down lions and bears; is this uncircumcised Philistine who has insulted the armies of the living God? He will be like one of his beasts.
And David said, The LORD has delivered me from the claw of the lion and from the paw of the bear; he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. Saul said to David, Go, the LORD be with you.
Then Saul put his uniform on David, and a bronze helmet on his head, and put on him armor.
David was not used to wearing the sword over his military uniform, so he walked on a trial basis, and said to Saul, "I am not used to it, so I cannot go out wearing it." Then he took it off.
He took the rod in his hand, and took five smooth stones from the brook, put them in his shepherd's burial, which is his pocket, and went to the Philistines with a sling in his hand.
The Philistines, with the shield-bearer in front, drew nearer and nearer to David.
The Philistine looked around, and when he saw David, he despised him, for he was young and red and beautiful in appearance.
The Philistine said to David, “Did you consider me a dog and come to me with a rod?” And he cursed David in the name of his gods.
The Philistine also said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.”
David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have insulted.
Today the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and behead you, and today I will give the corpses of the Philistines to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
And I will let this crowd know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear, for the war belongs to the LORD, and he will deliver you into our hands.
When the Philistines arose and came near to David, David ran quickly toward the Philistines.
He put his hand in his pocket, took the stone, and threw it with his sling, and struck the Philistine on the forehead, and the stone struck him in his forehead, and he fell to the ground.
