** The cup overflows. (Psalm 23:1-6) **
<text>
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters. He revives my soul and leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for the Lord is with me. Your rod and your staff comfort me. You have set a table for me in the sight of my enemies; you have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.
Hallelujah !
This text is the confession of faith of King David.
It is a confession of gratitude that comes from the heart, especially from the heart.
This confession of gratitude is the conclusion that King David has drawn throughout his entire life.
My cup overflows.
It is not just a simple thank you for something, but a confession of gratitude that comes from the depths of my heart throughout my entire life.
As we celebrate Thanksgiving today, I would like to express the meaning of true gratitude through David's confession of faith in the text.
I pray in the name of the Lord that all of you who listen to these words today will open your heart wide, have a heart of true gratitude like David, and spend your Thanksgiving in a meaningful way with a precious confession of faith.
First of all, the confession of faith that David emphasizes most in Psalm 23 is that my cup overflows.
It is a confession that I will not lack.
Then, for what reason could King David be able to make such a thrilling confession that he was so full and overflowing, and that he needed nothing more?
First of all, it says that God has become my shepherd.
We Koreans don't know too much about shepherds, just like people who tend to livestock.
But for the nomadic people of Israel, the most intimate and reliable word is shepherd.
The shepherds wore unfading cotton robes, had leather belts, and wore large cloaks woven from sheepskin or wool, and used these cloaks as quilts at night, and they ate and ate with their flocks day and night, and they lived together.
In addition, they used thorn clubs nailed to the end of an oak tree about 2 meters high, and they used slings to protect the sheep, and they lived by the side during the day and in the hut next to the cage at night to guard the sheep from thieves and animals.
Because the shepherds lived knowing that keeping and protecting the sheep was life, the sheep obeyed and followed the shepherd's will unconditionally.
Therefore, there are many places in the Bible where the relationship between God and His people is described as the relationship between a sheep and a shepherd.
In Psalm 23, David confesses that God is my shepherd.
The reason is that God gives us food to eat, just as a shepherd leads his sheep to pastures where there is food, and continues to provide us in any adversity.
Also, just like a shepherd who revives sick and suffering sheep with all his heart and never forgets even when it is difficult and difficult, God raises us up when we are weary and discouraged, run into problems, despair, and fall down. It is because he has given you strength and power.
Moreover, in a sinful world, we are always tempted by sin and are about to fall into sin, like a shepherd who leads the way, because He guides us on the path of righteousness, the right way, the true way of life, and the right way of life we should go. , that is what it is saying.
So David confesses that God has been my shepherd.
And in that confession, David is saying that even though no one in the world can be trusted, God is the one who can trust and entrust everything to me.
That's right.
There are very few people in the world you can trust.
Moreover, it is very rare to find someone who I can entrust my whole life with.
Even though there are so many virgin bachelors in the world, the number of old bachelors is increasing day by day, isn't it because there is no one to trust in the future?
Ex) Dongseo's words- There is no one in the world to trust. Friend Guarantee- Avoid-Away.
Truly, no matter where I look in the east, west, north, and south, there are very few places where you can trust me and leave it to me.
No matter how weary, weary, and thirsty we cry out, no matter how desperate we are, there are few people there to look after us.
David is a man who has gone through everything before and after birth.
He is a man who has done everything he wanted to do and had, whether it was warfare, conspiracy theories, wealth or fame, and politics.
But what King David finally confesses is that God is my only shepherd.
The only thing I can trust is God.
It means that only God is the one who will take care of me without changing, take care of me, and guide me.
These are not the words of a child.
These were not the words of a young, milky little kid.
This is the confession of King Noh, who lived all his life, overcoming the hurdles of life and death in the extremes of life.
Only God, and only God, is the one to depend on.
Because I depended only on that God, and that God became my shepherd.
My cup overflows,
I am confessing my gratitude, saying that I lack nothing.
Second, David says that the reason for this thanks is because God was with me.
In verse 4, he confesses, ?쏣ven though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
King David is a man who has gone through countless times of death.
In the battle with Goliath, in the countless wars with the Philistines and neighboring countries, in the envy and jealousy of King Saul, even his son Absalom had difficulties in being killed.
It is David who really wanted to die in the midst of such a lot of pain and suffering.
For example, in Psalm 22, David says, ?쏮y God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you far from helping me? my moaning
Do you not hear the voice? My God, I cry by day, and by night I am not silent, but you do not answer me. is saying
In addition to this, in many psalms such as Psalms 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 16, David complains of suffering.
But even in the midst of such suffering, even in the valley of the shadow of death, David is confessing that God was with me.
I am so moved by God who helped David by being with him so unchangingly. David confesses that my cup is overflowing and that I lack nothing.
Ex) Traffic accident exit group granted senior training session (tiredness after visitation)
If God is not with us, we cannot be relieved for even one second.
Knowing this, David is thrilled that my cup is overflowing and that I lack nothing.
Dear saints,
I want you to remember the life you have gone through.
How long has the Lord been with you?
Did God become a shepherd and guide you in every aspect?
Even though it was difficult at the time, it was painful and painful at that time, but how can I not thank you for leading me this far?
Just as David was so grateful, I pray in the name of the Lord that you will be all who look to God with a grateful heart like David.
3. Third, David is thankful for God's choice.
Verse 5 says, "You have set a table for me in the sight of my enemies, and you have anointed my head with oil; my cup overflows."
Me before the enemy, the anointed me, means the chosen people.
That is, God's people.
Our lives that are not worth throwing away, we commit only sins like we eat, we commit only foolish and lazy things day and night, and we only do detestable and showy things.
Yet, because of the cross of Jesus Christ, because of His blood, because of the shedding of blood, we became free children of God, citizens of the kingdom of heaven, eternal life, and salvation.
David committed a decisive sin.
Although he committed the sins of pride, adultery, and loss of righteousness, God accepted his repentance.
He received the repentance of David, who wet his bed with tears, beat his breast and wept, not only forgave him, but chose him and made him a great king of Israel and a brilliant torch for the nation of Israel.
Not only that, but he kept his goodness and mercy with him forever.
Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life...
Can you not help but thank God for this?
Is it possible not to give thanks in front of this God with all sincerity and true heart?
So David says, "In the house of God I will dwell forever."
I hate luxurious palaces, wealth and honor, and the position of a king, and I want to give my whole body to God and live forever, looking only at God like a sunflower.
We, who are celebrating Thanksgiving today, should also give this heart.
We must give up our formal and ceremonial heart and give thanks to God with all our sincerity.
In the name of the Lord, I pray in the name of the Lord that it will be a Thanksgiving Day that God is truly pleased with with a heart of thanksgiving like David and a whole body of thanks. Amen.
