Title: The Death of Lazarus / John 11:1
Subject: The death of Lazarus / John 11:1-
The event of raising Lazarus from the dead is not only the event of overcoming death, but also a concrete example of the Lord's reward. Let's examine the love of the Lord through the text.
1. Lazarus, Mary, and Martha.
Mary, Martha, and Lazarus were brothers, living in a town called Bethany, 2 km from Jerusalem.
1) Who is [Mary]?
1) Mary is the woman who anointed Jesus with perfume.
In the Bible, the incident of anointing Jesus with perfume is mentioned in Matthew 26, Mark 14, and John 12.
It would be better to look at the events of Luke 7 separately. In other words, it is easier to understand to understand that the anointing occurred twice.
Matthew 26:2 As you know, after two days it is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be sold to be crucified.
Matthew 26:6 While Jesus was in the house of Simon the leper in Bethany,
Matthew 26:7 A woman came out with an alabaster jar of very precious perfume, and poured it on Jesus' head while he was eating.
Mark 14:3 While Jesus was eating at the house of Simon the leper in Bethany, a woman brought a very expensive ointment of pure nard, broke it, and poured it on Jesus' head.
John 12:1 Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where was Lazarus, whom Jesus had raised from the dead.
John 12:2 There they were having a banquet for Jesus, and when they saw Martha, Lazarus was among those who were sitting with Jesus.
John 12:3 Mary took a pound of very expensive perfume, pure nard, poured it on Jesus' feet, and washed his feet with her hair, and the house was filled with the smell of perfume.
Luke 7:37 When there was a woman who was a sinner in that town, and she knew that Jesus was sitting in the house of a Pharisee, she brought an alabaster jar of perfumed oil and came to her.
Luke 7:38 And standing behind Jesus' feet at his feet, weeping and weeping, he wet his feet with tears, and washed them with his own hair, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with perfume.
②Mary was a woman who longed for the word of the Lord.
Luke 10:38 As they were going on the road, Jesus entered a village, and there was a woman named Martha who welcomed her into her house.
Luke 10:39 And she had a sister named Mary, and she sat at the feet of the Lord and listened to her words.
2) Martha, a person of service
① She is a woman who treated the Lord well.
Luke 10:40 Martha was busy with many preparations.
② She is a woman who works hard to serve.
3) The one whom the Lord loves, Lazarus
① Lazarus here is a different person from [Lazarus the beggar].
②He has no detailed explanation before.
2. Jesus' love
1) Jesus loved these three children especially.
John 11:5 Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
①Jesus already knew the three children, and when he went to Bethany, he used to stop by.
2) Jesus called Lazarus a [friend].
John 11:11 ... And he said to them, Our friend Lazarus is asleep, but I am going to wake him up.
①[Our friend], Jesus uses the expression “fivlo” in the word [our friend] for Lazarus, which is also one of the words to express love and means love as a friend.
Jesus is referring to Lazarus as [a friend].
John 15:14 You are my friends if you do what I command you.
②[I am going to wake you up]
Saying I'm going to wake you up doesn't mean that you might run into the Jews who were trying to stone you.
It means that He will go to Judea, and that He will raise the dead.
It is the image of the Lord going for those he loves even in times of crisis.
3) Jesus' tears
John 11:35 Jesus wept
John 11:36 Then the Jews said, Behold, how did you love him?
①[Jesus wept]
In the body of love, Jesus not only sympathized with all human suffering and suffering, but also shed tears for those he loved.
The Lord loved Lazarus to the point of tears.
②[Then the Jews said, Behold how they loved him]
Even the unbelieving Jews around, seeing the tears of the Lord, how much did Jesus love Lazarus? The Lord loved Lazarus enough to tell the story.
3. The Meaning of Lazarus' Death
1) Even those who love suffer difficulties.
①Those whom the Lord loves are also ill.
11:3 Then his sisters sent to Jesus, saying, “Lord, behold, the one you love is sick.”
② Those whom the Lord loves must wait. even to the point of death.
The Lord stayed two more days after hearing the news, so he went to Bethany four days after he died.
Isaiah 30:18 But the LORD waits, because it is with mercy to you, and he will rise up to have mercy on them.
*The Lord waited until his time.
2) That death is for the glory of God.
John 11:4 When Jesus heard this, he said, "This is not a mortal disease, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified through it."
4. With the faith that asks
1) Lazarus' sisters can see that when Lazarus was sick, he was the first to tell Jesus.
Verse 3 Then his sisters sent to Jesus, saying, “Look, Lord, the one you love is sick.”
① The confession of [Lord] is a confession of a believer and proves that they believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah.
② By saying [The one you love is ill], you are proclaiming the disease of Lazarus with an earnest heart.
2) Notification to the Lord is a form of trusting in Jesus Christ.
Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a great help in trouble.
**When Hezekiah received a threatening letter from Rabshakeh, he went up to the temple, opened it, and prayed to God.
2 Kings 19:14 When Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the lion, he went up to the house of the LORD and opened the letter before the LORD.
2 Kings 19:15 And he prayed before him, saying, The God of Israel above the cherubim, you made the heavens and the earth.
2 Kings 19:16 Incline your ear, O LORD, and hear; O LORD, open your eyes and see. Hear the words Sennacherib sent to blaspheme the living God.
3) To notify the Lord is to rely on the Lord.
Psalm 37:5 Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will do it.
**** conclusion ****
1. Let us rely on the Lord in any circumstance.
