Title: The Healing Ministry of Jesus
Jesus' healing ministry
Matthew 9:35-10:1
2009. 9. 27, afternoon
Jesus Christ is the Savior who saved us, and at the same time He lived the ideal life we should imitate. We must believe in the words and work of Jesus, and we must also follow His words and life.
During his public life, Jesus traveled to each city and village to teach, preach the gospel, heal all diseases and infirmities, and practice healing.
Verse 35: “Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness.”
This verse summarizes Jesus' second Galilean ministry and presents an overall pattern using three participles. They are ‘Didascon’ (teaching, teaching), ‘Kerupson’ (preaching, gospel preaching), and ‘Derafuon’ (healing).
Of the 9 works of Jesus recorded in the 9th chapter of the Gospel of Matthew including this verse and the previous chapter (8), except for the fourth miracle that calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee (8:23-27), the remaining 8 works were Healing ministry plays a large role in Jesus' ministry to the extent that all of them deal with miracles centered on the healing ministry.
Healing work is one of the three major works of Jesus. Jesus came to this earth as a healer. This was previously foretold through the prophet Isaiah.
Luke 4:18-19 = “The Holy Spirit of the Lord has come upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, and has sent me to preach liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, and to set the oppressed free. and to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor."
According to this prophecy, the public ministry of the Messiah would be to be anointed by the Holy Spirit, preach, and heal. During his public life, Jesus devoted himself to the work of healing along with the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom of God according to the prophecies of the prophets.
Our Jesus is the healer. If we deny the healing work of Jesus, we will be making the mistake of denying a part of His Messianic work. In the 4 Gospels, 41 cases of Jesus' healing are recorded. Of the total of 3774 verses in the 4 Gospels, 484 verses deal with Jesus' work of healing the whole man. If there are a total of 1257 to 484 dialogues in the 4 Gospels, it can be said that 38.5% are related to the healing work of Jesus.
The healing ministry is such an important ministry entrusted to the church. God has already given us the power to heal, and He is showing us a sign before our eyes. We must restore it to the level of the early church and spread it.
To do this, it is necessary to first find out the motive and purpose of Jesus' healing work, and look at the healing methods. I hope that today's message will serve as an opportunity to lay the biblical foundation for the healing ministry.
1. Motivation and Purpose of Healing Ministry Verses 35-36
“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them, for they were troubled and lost, like sheep without a shepherd.”
In the Gospels, the motives and purposes of Jesus' healing ministry are revealed in several ways. These will be important guidelines that the church must keep in mind when it comes to healing ministry.
1) Jesus had compassion on those who suffered from disease (Matthew 9:35-36). The Lord's love and mercy are the motives of the healing ministry.
2) Jesus revealed the glory of God through the healing work, and the people glorified God (John 11:1-45, Luke 5:17-26).
3) Through the healing ministry, Jesus testified that He was the Messiah who came according to the prophecies of the prophets. When John the Baptist sent his disciples to Jesus and asked, 'Are you the Messiah to come?', Jesus testified that the prophecy of Isaiah 35:4-6 was fulfilled through his healing ministry and that he was the Messiah.
4) Jesus testified that his words were the truth by healing the sick (Luke 5:18-26).
5) Jesus healed the sick in response when they cried out in faith and prayed (Mark 7:25-30, Mark 10:46-52).
6) As a sign of the coming of the kingdom of God, Jesus cast out demons and healed the sick (Matthew 12:22-28, Luke 4:40-44).
7) Jesus healed and performed miracles so that people could repent (Luke 10:8-12) and receive eternal life through faith in Jesus (John 20:30-31).
8) Jesus trained his disciples through his healing ministry so that the healing ministry could continue in the church age.
Saints! Despite the fact that healing is such an important part of Jesus' ministry, the church today takes it too lightly. This is something that must be corrected.
Like the Lord, we should have more compassion for those who suffer from disease. We, too, should strive for healing work by actively utilizing the authority given to the people of God's kingdom. Through this, we must become a church that glorifies God.
Like the members of the early church, we should become more devoted to casting out unclean spirits and raising dead souls with the power and authority of the name of Jesus.
2. How Jesus Healed
In order to understand the healing work of Jesus, it is necessary to find out the methods of Jesus' healing work through the examples recorded in the Gospels.
There are 41 healing cases recorded in the 4 Gospels. The diseases that the Lord healed are very diverse, and there are more than 10 different ways to cure them.
In the case of Peter's mother-in-law, Jesus touched him, laid his hands on him, and healed him with the word. In the case of a man possessed by a demon in Gerasea, he cast out demons with the word, and in the case of a bleeding woman, the woman was healed by touching Jesus with faith.
