11. Behold, the days are coming, saith the Sovereign LORD, that I will send a famine upon the land, not a hunger for bread, nor a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the word of the LORD.

12. People will stagger from sea to sea, from north to east, running to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, but will not find it.

13. In that day both the beautiful virgin and the young man will be thirsty and weary.

14. Anyone who swears by the sinful idols of Samaria, saying, “As for the survival of your god, Dan,” or as for the survival of those who belong to Beersheba, will fall and will not rise again.

Subject: The Holy Spirit and the Word

Text: Amos 8:11-14, 2 Timothy 3:12-17

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever, who is the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive him, for it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know me, for I dwell with you. will be in you” (John 14:16,17). These are the words the Lord spoke to His disciples in Mark's upper room. These are the words before Jesus, who came to this earth in the flesh, finished his redemptive work on earth, and left only his disciples on the earth. “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me” (John 14:1). 'I will ask' (erotao) is a special 'supplication' (Luke 4:38) and 'beg' (Acts 3:3), and 'request' earnestly from a mediating standpoint (Matthew 15:23; Luke 14: 32) means.

At that time, the disciples did not know about the Holy Spirit, nor did they know the necessity of it. But Jesus begged God his Father to send the Holy Spirit. This is the petition of the Lord who came to this earth in the flesh (John 1:14). The Lord's concern for us. Love. Like Heavenly Father's character (Matthew 6:32), it is an image of love that considers our needs. The Holy Spirit, who was sent in this way, carries out the 'mission to be with the saints forever and ever'. Therefore, the Christian life of faith begins with the Holy Spirit (John 3:5; 1 Corinthians 12:3), and ends with the Holy Spirit into eternity (Revelation 22:17). There is no relationship between the Holy Spirit and the ‘world that has turned its back on God’ (John 14:16a). In the work of the Holy Spirit toward the world, there is only 'rebuke' (sin, righteousness, judgment) (John 16:8-11). Because he only helps God's people.

The Holy Spirit is the ‘Spirit of truth’ (John 14:17a). He delivers all the heavenly graces we need to live as children of God. “The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, who will teach you all things and will remind you of all that I have said to you” (John 14:26). Who is the Creator God to us? What are we to God? Who is Jesus to us? relationship with us? He is giving you all the instruction you need. There is also a specific textbook for that teaching. It's a bible verse. “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be perfected for every good work” (2 Timothy 3: 16,17). It is an essential condition for perfect human beings and perfect actions (John 8:31,32).

The New Testament text (2 Tim. 3:12-17) reveals that it was a period of spiritual darkness (2 Tim. 3:1-11). It was a time when only the appearance of godliness remained and the power of godliness was denied (2 Timothy 3:5). It was a time of persecution for those who wanted to live a godly life (2 Timothy 3:12). It is a picture of ‘the time of suffering in the last days’. How should I live? We must live with the wisdom of salvation through the Bible (2 Timothy 3:15). Prophet Amos lived in a spiritual dark period in the Old Testament era (B.C.760-753). The wretchedness of northern Israel, which stood on the threshold of judgment due to idolatry, was called “a famine of not hearing the word of God” (Amos 8:12). There was a similar period in the New Testament times. This is an age of ignorance and ungodliness toward the Holy Spirit. It is a time when we were not occupied with the apologetics of Jesus being the Christ. R.A.Torrey said to beware of ‘the Word without the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit without the Word’. It is an indicator of the life of faith.
