Sermons for Preaching

Title: The Jewish Salvation Problem/Romans 9

Content: The Jewish Salvation Problem

Romans 9

Chapters 1-8 discuss the sanctification of sin and justification (revelation of impartiality).

Chapters 9-11: Israel's Salvation Problem (Justification of Righteousness)

Chapters 12-16 are the application of impartiality (the practice of impartiality).

1. God's Sovereign Choice (1-13)

① Positive elements of the people of Israel (1-5)

It deals with the priorities of the people of Israel. The people of Israel enjoy many privileges as the chosen people used in the unfolding of God's history of redemption. Adoption, glory, covenant, law, worship, promise, etc. And Jesus was physically descended from Israel. Israel enjoyed the glorious position of being used as a means of God's work of redemption.

However, this is not directly related to salvation (reducing the glory of Israel).

② Scope of true Israel (6-13)

God's choice is not just an indiscriminate application of all of the people of Israel by descent. Many of the descendants of the Israelites could be excluded from God's choice. Not all Abraham's seed are children of God, but only the seed of Isaac, the child of the promise, can become God's children.

2. God's Sovereign Election Principle (14-29)

① God's Principle of Election

All things are decided according to the will of God without considering human actions at all. This is only the sovereign principle of God.

② Examples of God's Sovereign Election

The parable of the potter used for God's sovereign choice.

Even the potter has authority, and God's sovereign choice is natural.

(1) Vessel of wrath - The person corresponding to this is Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. The Bible testifies that Pharaoh's hard heart, who resisted God's will, was also God's providence.

(2) Vessels of mercy - The person corresponding to this is Israel, and God's mercy was given in various ways in each era.

3. Human Responsibility (30-33)

So far, we are writing about God's sovereign choice, but from now on we are writing about human responsibility.

The law and works cannot achieve impartiality. The righteousness that comes only through faith.

Therefore, we must rely on faith alone.
