Title: The Joy and Peace of Jesus
Contents
Text commentary/ The text tells the disciples goodbye when Jesus is the Son of God, and even though He has no reason to die like sinners, when the time to die on the cross, which is the most painful and wretched than any other person, is approaching. This is a foreshadowing.
Question 1: What does Jesus say about things to come? (Verses 16-24)
Answer: (1) The phrase “in a little while you will not see me” in verse 16 means that you will not see Jesus because Jesus goes to the Father from the beginning of his death on the cross. And when he said, “You will see me in a little while,” it means that Jesus will appear to his disciples after the resurrection. This means that Jesus will come again through the coming of the Holy Spirit to the disciples. But the disciples could hardly understand what Jesus meant (verses 17-18).
(2) In the age to come, we can enjoy joy through prayer (verses 20-25). First, Jesus explained the grace of turning sorrow into joy with the parable of a woman giving birth (verse 20). The faith in the Age of the Holy Spirit is the faith in the Age of the Holy Spirit to believe that we do not expect sad things to be completely eliminated, but that our sorrows are transformed into joys.
⑶ So, in the age of the Holy Spirit, we must go through the labor of childbirth to overcome suffering (verse 21). Jesus did not view the suffering he is experiencing now as a fearful and unfortunate event, and the Lord Himself did not die an unfair death on the cross with a sinless body, but promised that thousands of people would be saved and a good day of joy would come. Because he has seen it, he does not avoid suffering and comforts his grieving disciples (verse 22). He comforts you with the promise of answering prayers (verse 23). Now, after Jesus ascended into heaven, we must pray in His name (verse 24).
Question 2: How does Jesus know his time? (Verses 25-32)
Answer: (1) As Jesus went to the Father, a new age will unfold, and Jesus, who spoke in parables before the Holy Spirit came, will now speak clearly when the Holy Spirit comes (verse 25).
(2) The good thing about Jesus' departure is that if there is something they do not understand the word of God, if you pray to God in the name of Jesus and ask for it, God will enlighten you and hear your prayer (verse 26). Praying saints need two kinds of faith. One is love for Jesus and the other is faith in Jesus (verse 27).
⑶ Jesus came into this world from the Father, and now is the new age that is coming because Jesus has left the world and is going to the Father (verse 28). Since the disciples had not yet received the Holy Spirit of the new age, they did not understand the prophecy of the Lord's resurrection and ascension (verse 29). But the disciples do not wait for the Lord to ask questions from men. Rather, Jesus instilled confidence in his disciples by saying that he was the Son of God who came from God. So the disciples believed that Jesus was the Son of God (verses 30-31). But Jesus prophesies that the disciples will be scattered and that God will leave him alone (verse 32).
Question 3: What does Jesus do when he is afraid? (verse 33)
Answer: (1) Jesus gives us peace when we face fear (verse 33). We can enjoy peace only when we overcome the world with the faith that Jesus overcame the world.
(2) Jesus knew who he had to fight against. He knew that the object of the fight was not outside, but inside him. Like Jesus, if we want to become victors who say, 'I have overcome the world,' we must overcome ourselves.
⑶ The Holy Spirit reveals the glory of the Lord (verse 14). The Comforter, the Holy Spirit, comes to reveal the events of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the work of the Holy Spirit reveals the glory of Jesus. And testify of Jesus. The Christian's victory is when Christ becomes the master of our life. No matter what kind of tribulation you face in the world, there is no tribulation that the Lord cannot control.
Decision message:
Now we must end the fight. I must end the fight with death on the cross. That battle was already over when Jesus died. And it is the grace that has given us true peace (John 14:27). We have betrayed the Lord. But rather than condemning and judging, the Lord has shown us how to overcome the world. If God is with us, we can overcome the anxiety and wars of the world. You will face tribulation in the world, but the Lord tells you to win in the way you overcome the world.
