Old Testament
6. With what shall I go before the LORD, and worship the Most High God, shall I go before him with a calf a year old as a burnt offering?
7. Shall the LORD take pleasure in oil like a thousand rams or ten thousand rivers? Will I give my firstborn son for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
8. Man, the Lord has shown you what is good. What does the Lord ask of you, but not to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
new testament
30. While he was eating with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to them.
31. Their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but Jesus was not seen by them.
32. And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning within us while he spoke to us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?
33. He got up at that time and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples and those who were with them gathered together.
34. They said, “The Lord has risen, and has appeared to Simon.”
35. Both of them told what had happened on the road and what was made known to them by Jesus breaking the bread.
sermon
The two disciples going down to Emmaus, unaware of the resurrection of Jesus, were filled with disappointment. Jesus approached them and talked to them, but they did not know that it was Jesus. Why did they not know the Lord? The reason is that they tried to understand only with their own reason without faith. From the conversation they exchanged, the disciples could never understand what had happened recently.
Because Jesus of Nazareth was a powerful prophet before God and the people, they thought he was the prophet who would redeem Israel, but the high priests crucified him. How could the Messiah die at the hands of men?
The Lord can only be seen by faith. The Lord rebuked them for their lack of faith: “You foolish and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken.” As Jesus recounted the prophecies of Jesus from beginning to end in the Bible, he taught that Christ would not come as a political liberator, but to redeem those enslaved to sin and enter into glory after his suffering. Learning the Bible prepares your eyes to be opened. The Word awakens our souls.
When the sun went down and they went into a nearby town together, Jesus ate food with his disciples. On the spot, Jesus broke the bread, gave thanks and gave it to the disciples, and when they received the bread the Lord had given, their eyes were opened. I found out that it was Jesus. What changes happened to them as they learned that the Lord was always with them?
(1) He gave me comfort and peace in my heart. they said to each other “Weren’t our hearts burning within us as He spoke to us on the road and opened the Bible to us?” When we are in tribulation, weeping tears of sorrow, when we are frustrated and injustice, the Lord comes to comfort us and give us strength and peace. give
(2) He gave assurance through unity. The two disciples got up and went back to Jerusalem. There, the eleven and those who were with them were gathering and sharing what they had seen of the resurrection of the Lord.
The disciples, who had been scattered and went their own way, met the Lord on the road and gathered together again. united in one mind.
(3) He gave us hope to testify. As both witnessed what had happened on the road, they told what was made known to them by Jesus breaking the bread. Desperate, they had hope. I have something to tell them. Jesus is risen again. He overcame death and curses and rose again. They got up and went out preaching the Lord.
The Lord is with us today. You are always with those who believe in you. He accompanies us on the road, guides and protects us. Today, the Lord teaches us the Word, makes us understand, breaks bread, and opens our eyes. He wants us to know how much the Lord loves us. He wants to bring comfort and peace to our hearts. He wants to convince you by unity. He wants to give you hope to testify. “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the world.”
