Title: The Pain of the Cross
Bible: Galatians 3:1-9
Quiet Prayer: Together
Hymn: 144
Representative Prayer: Brother Jeong Tae-ho
Starting Point of the Word>>
Today, through the sermon of the text, we will share a sermon under the title “Pain of the Cross”.
If we were to describe the history of the Bible in one word, we could say that it is “the love of Jesus Christ.”
However, if you tell the most precious and precious evidence of love throughout the Bible, it would be the pain of the cross and death that no one would deny.
So, if we look at the lives of the forefathers of faith, we see that they lived with the grace of the cross.
After meeting Jesus, the apostle Paul began preaching the gospel, and he confessed his faith to his disciples and churches, saying, “I have decided not to know anything other than Jesus Christ and the cross.”
So, looking at his life, he preached only the gospel of the cross, boasted only of Jesus of the cross, spoke only of the faith of the cross, and preached only the truth of the cross.
In verse 3, Paul tells the people of Galatia:
“You foolish Galatians, who deceived you when Jesus Christ was clearly shown before your eyes that he was crucified?”
Now the Galatians know the grace and love of Christ crucified, but rather live according to their own lusts, so Paul is saying to them, 'You are foolish.'
If we, like the people of Galatia, have a heart to live according to the desires of the flesh while knowing the grace and love of the Lord, put it down before the Lord and only look at the cross that He bore.
Let's close our eyes together this time.
And I think of Jesus on the cross, pouring his blood on me.
And think of the crown of thorns on the Lord's head.
What do you think of when you think of the suffering of the cross that Jesus suffered?
How can we never know the suffering of the cross of the Lord who bore the cross for us?
In the name of the Lord, we ask you to give us a precious time to think about the suffering of the cross that the Lord suffered through the words of today's text.
Go to Word>>
Then, what kind of pain was the suffering of the cross that the Lord suffered?
First, it is the suffering of divinity.
According to Philippians 2:6,
“For he, being in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as robbery, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human form, and being found in human form, humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross ”
Says.
This verse tells us that Jesus is the person of God and is equal to God.
But what are those who see Jesus carrying the cross doing?
Did the people of those days not know that Jesus was suffering on the cross now?
These are the people who followed him just a day ago, wondering if he might become the leader of Israel.
They were the people who followed Jesus to make him king of Israel.
But now they are of no help towards Jesus who carries the cross in front of their eyes.
Rather, people are spitting, swearing, mocking and throwing stones at Jesus who carried the cross.
Now, they see Jesus passing before their eyes not as the Son of God, but as one of the sinners.
We could not praise and worship Jesus, the Son of God, but rather drove him to the place of suffering on the cross.
What do you guys think of us?
Are you one of them who ridicules and persecutes Jesus who is suffering on the cross?
Or, like Simon of Cyrene, are you sharing the pain of the Lord's cross?
Second, the suffering of the cross means suffering of the soul.
According to Matthew 26:39,
“Going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; but not as I will, but as you will.”
Jesus is now offering the last prayer of the soul in Gethsemane.
Jesus, who was equal with God, knew how difficult and painful the suffering of the cross was because he came in a human body. Finally, he prayed to God for his soul.
However, the Lord's prayer to pass the suffering of the cross soon turns into a confession of obeying the Father's will for all souls of mankind.
So, in the words of Mark 14:34, Jesus' feelings at this time are,
“My heart is so troubled that I am about to die, so stay here and stay awake with me.
Says.
Because it was a prayer with such pain and suffering of the soul, it was a prayer of earnestness until the sweat turned into drops of blood.
And at the end of the cross, Jesus cried out to God.
Eli, eli, llama, sabachthani, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me???
This last cry of Jesus is a voice of suffering that no one can understand.
The only people who could see the suffering of the soul that Jesus suffered in front of this cross were those who tried to kill him.
The disciple who promised to protect Jesus betrayed Jesus, and the other disciples also abandoned him and ran away.
Even the robber who was crucified next to him mocks the Lord on the cross.
Even God the Father gave up His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
But this was the spiritual suffering that the Lord had to bear in order to atone for our sins.
Now as we observe Lent, we must remember the Lord who bore the spiritual sufferings of the cross for us.
Third, and lastly, the suffering of the cross refers to the physical suffering that Jesus bore.
The cross was the mold that the Phoenicians came up with to crucify and kill very wicked sinners, especially slaves.
The body shrinks, the blood on the hands and feet dries up, and the blood collects in the head and intestines, causing headaches, wound fever, and tetanus.
He was whipped all over his body, his body was bruised, and his body was bruised and bruised, and his knees were shattered and broken, and his feet were pierced by the roots of stones, and his face was stained with red blood, and his face was a Roman soldier. It was bruised and swollen by the field, and became indistinguishable.
When he barely came up to Calvary, the people stripped him of all the clothes he was wearing, laid him on a cross, bound his limbs, and nailed them to both hands and feet with coarse iron nails.
We must now remember how severe the physical suffering of Jesus on the cross was.
To Jesus, who was suffering from the agony of the cross, the soldiers offered deboned wine to relieve suffering, but he did not receive it.
The torment of the cross, which started at 9 am, continued for 6 hours until 3 pm.
The soldiers pierced Jesus in the side with spears and swords.
At that time, the blood and water in the body are poured out.
Just three or four days ago, those who greeted us with palm branches in their hands saying, “Son of David, Hosanna, Hosanna,” were rather, “Kill him, kill him, crucify him to death.” are shouting
And Jesus tasted the sorrow of being abandoned by all mankind and even abandoned by God the Father, who is the only refuge.
Jesus carried a lonely cross with no one with him.
At the end of the speech>>
Ladies and gentlemen, we talked about the suffering of Jesus on the cross today.
The suffering Jesus suffered on the cross was death for me and for you.
What do we see now, and who are we following?
Are you seeing the image of the Lord who bore the cross in our eyes?
Can you see the image of the Lord who was pleased to bear even the pain of the cross?
United Prayer>>
We give praise and worship to God who is not ashamed even on the cross for us.
God gave us his only begotten Son, Jesus, for us, but have mercy on us that we left thee before the cross and dwelt in sin with the world.
Let us make this Lent the best place of grace in our lives, and make it a time to strengthen our faith through prayer and the Word.
Help us to bear the cross of the Lord to the world, and to be witnesses who testify of the true love of Christ.
Like the confession of the Apostle Paul, remember the pain of the cross of the Lord that we can see clearly with grace, and grant us the grace to be raised up as true disciples of the Lord.
Help us to become workers used by God in the last days, and to accumulate many fruits of righteousness in the kingdom of heaven.
We give thanks in the name of Jesus, who bore the pain of the cross for us. Amen
