Title: The Repentance of the People of Nineveh

Contents

I don't even speak

Bible Verse: Jonah 3:1-10

Date: 2010. 3. 21.

Title: Repentance of the people of Nineveh

2:10. And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah to dry land.

1. The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to them what I have commanded you.” Jonah got up and went to Nineveh, as the Lord had said. As soon as he entered the city, he traveled a day's journey and cried out, "Nineveh will fall in forty days." Then the people of Nineveh believed in God and proclaimed a fast and wore sackcloth, small and large. He got up, took off his robe, put on sackcloth, and sat down in the ashes. And the king made a decree with him and proclaimed it in Nineveh, saying, "You shall not put anything in your mouth, man, beast, herd, or sheep, you shall not eat, nor drink water, All beasts and animals shall be clothed in sackcloth, and they will cry out to the Lord with all effort, and each will turn from his evil way and the violence of his hands. Perhaps God will turn his will and put an end to his wrath, that we may not perish. Do you know?

10. When God saw what they had done, that they had turned from their evil way, he changed his mind and did not bring the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them.

Jon 2:10. And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah to dry land.

Jonah's release from prison and deliverance from death can be regarded as an example of God's mercy toward a poor penitent who prays in agony. God had mercy on him and he will never contend with him. He solves life's difficulties

'As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the earth' (Matthew 12:40).

His release seems to be a type and symbol of Christ's resurrection.

He died and was buried to calm the storm of our sins.

And like Jonah, he became a prisoner for our debt, and he was in the tomb three days and three nights.

But he came out of the grave on the third day to proclaim repentance and forgiveness of sins widely, even to the Gentiles.

I hope it will be a time to think of the grace of the Lord and listen to the voice of the Lord.

There are cases that have even been reported in the news last week.

Monk Beop - A life of no possessions. Humanity (Humanism)

But it was there. It's not about criticizing or judging.

There was no problem with sin and no solution to it.

“I can’t understand your gods who throw people who call themselves their children into hellfire just because they don’t believe in them. I'd rather go to hell and rescue those injustice souls who were abandoned by your god."

problem of sin

oneness

It is human (compared to the fallen Christianity), but it has its limits.

Christianity has a solution to the problem of sin.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, by the grace of God freely through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6:23 The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 5:8 God demonstrates his love for us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

Although they are weak and sinful human beings, He loved them and showed them the way of salvation.

1 Peter 3:18-20 Christ also died for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, who also was in prison in the spirit. They preached to the spirits, who were disobedient in the days of Noah, when God waited patiently while the ark was being prepared. There were only a few who were saved by water in the ark, only eight.

The crystallization of judgment and salvation - the love of the cross.

Such love of God reaches a place called Nineveh and spreads love.

-. Jonah's Second Call

1:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.

3:2 Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to them what I have commanded you.

It was not different from the first, but the same calling.

God gives you another chance. name confirmation.

You must not lose your calling. Don't lose your purpose in life.

If you lose your calling, you lose your direction in life, and everything seems to be going well, but in the end, you are on the way to ruin. It must have been a very difficult time for the suffering and suffering of losing your calling.

Jonah's Torment - Thrown into the sea, 3 days in the belly of a fish, no food, fear, terror

Having a vision is really important.

Ephesians 4:1 Therefore, I, a prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling to which you have been called.

Even while in prison, he did not give up on his calling.

Because that is the only hope that can survive.

-. Repentance of the people of Nineveh

city of Nineveh; A very large city, a three-day road.

Jonah's cry - Nineveh will fall in forty days.

It was not a word of mercy or grace.

It was a message about a strong judgment.

John the Baptist Matthew 3:2 Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand

Jesus Matthew 4:17 From that time on, Jesus began to preach, saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

It wasn't a sweet message to persuade them or that God's grace and blessings would come.

They believed in God, proclaimed a fast, and wore sackcloth, small and large.

Humility and Repentance

king's decree; Gives orders to people and even beasts

Outwardly put on sackcloth and fast

There was a sincere repentance within.

They will cry out to the LORD with all their might, and each will turn from his evil ways and from the violence of his hands.

Undoing past wrongs.

On the other hand, about the unrepentant Israelites...

'The men of Nineveh will rise at the judgment and condemn this generation, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, but one greater than Jonah is here' (Matthew 12:41).

Luke 11:30-32 As Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be in this generation. At the judgment, the queen of the south will rise up to condemn this generation, for she has come from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Greater than Solomon is here, and the men of Nineveh will rise at the judgment and condemn this generation, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, but one greater than Jonah is here.

Nineveh condemned the unrepentant and stubbornness of Israel at that time.

God sent many prophets to Israel who were known to be 'powerful in word and deed'.

On the other hand, he sent only one to Nineveh. Moreover, he was a stranger, shabby, and weak physically after a long journey.

But while they repented, Israel did not.

Jonah preached only one word, and there is no record that he performed any signs or signs.

Yet, while they repented, Israel continued to be stubborn.

Jonah only warned of wrath and destruction.

We do not find him encouraging them to hope that they will find mercy if they repent. Yet they repented.

But Israel continued to refuse to repent even though the prophets tried to lead them in cords of love. The people of Nineveh believed in God.

-. God's forgiveness

Here is the wonderful mercy of God in pardoning the repentant people of Nineveh (v. 10). Seeing that God... had turned away from that evil way. It was what God had hoped for and required.

It is important to turn around. change of direction.

Living in a changed form, not the way it used to be.

We can't find anything here about offering sacrifices to God to atone for sins. God's sacrifice is a broken spirit.

Psalm 51:16-17 You do not delight in sacrifice; otherwise I would have offered it. You take no pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

It was David's prayer of confession.

That is, God does not despise a broken and contrite spirit like the people of Nineveh. He supports and honors them.

There is God's love to save the people of Nineveh through Jonah's calling.

Let's give our hearts to God who wants a broken heart and reaffirm God's love once again and live victoriously for a week.
