Title: The Sabbath Controversy/Matthew 12:1-8
Contents
I. Problems can start from small things.
1) On the Sabbath day, Jesus was going to the synagogue with his disciples.
① However, while passing through the wheat fields, the disciples became hungry and began to cut and eat the heads of wheat.
②Of course, Jesus was also hungry, but he didn't cut the ears and he didn't stop the disciples from doing that.
③Because Jesus did not view the disciples' such behavior as bad.
2) This work was permitted by law.
① In the Mosaic Law, it was permissible to enter someone else's grain field and cut the heads of grain with one's hands.
② The reason Jesus allowed his disciples to cut and eat the heads of wheat was also because their actions were permitted by the law.
③ The law/ It is okay for the poor and those who travel long distances to go into someone else's vineyard and eat when they are full.
④ However, it is forbidden to bring grapes in a bowl or put a sickle on the grain.
3) This spirit of the law
① It does not allow inhumane and anti-communal social norms in which neighbors starve to death even after leaving food.
② This is a word that teaches that no legal norm should take precedence over human life.
③ Everything in this world belongs to God, and all of them are permitted for humans.
II. But the Pharisees, who knew this better than anyone else, condemned the disciples' actions.
1) The Jewish religious leaders at that time, such as the Pharisees and the scribes,// were always monitoring the every move of Jesus and his disciples.
①They wondered at whose house Jesus’ companions were eating.
② When eating food, wash your hands and check whether you are eating or not.
③ I used to fight while closely monitoring whether I was fasting or not.
2) It was because of their monitoring activities that it became a problem for the disciples of Jesus to cut and eat the ears of wheat on the Sabbath.
①They were like Satan.
② Satan's purpose is to make believers fall by any means by examining the words and deeds of all humans. (Rev 12:10)
③ The Pharisees have no way of suppressing their anxiety and envy when their position is shaken because of Jesus, and eventually they even come up with a terrible plan called a murder conspiracy.
④ They thought that the incident of cutting and eating the ears of wheat on the Sabbath was a very good opportunity to attack Jesus and his disciples.
3) So the Pharisees did not miss the opportunity to come to Jesus and accuse the disciples of “doing things that are not allowed on the Sabbath.”
①Their attack on the disciples has the same meaning as the attack on Jesus.
② Because the mistakes of the disciples are the responsibility of the teacher.
③ Therefore, the Pharisees were trying to hold Jesus accountable for pointing out the disciples' misconduct.
4) In the eyes of the Pharisees, it was a double sin to cut and eat ears of wheat on the Sabbath.
① The sin of harvesting on the Sabbath,
②The sin of threshing on the Sabbath is applied at the same time.
③This had a contradiction in keeping them as they had made it so that they took precedence over God's law.
Saints should not have a critical eye.
Please don't look at people with the eyes of criticism.
Please do not look at the church with the eyes of criticism.
Saints should always live an exemplary life. (Apostle Paul)
We must always be careful in our words and actions so that we do not go up and down in people's gossip.
Ⅲ. In response, Jesus corrected their mistake.
1) The attacks of the Pharisees were based on the traditions of the elders (their traditions) about the Sabbath. In response, Jesus pointed out the injustice of the Jews by giving two examples that the Jews could not reject.
①I took the case of David, whom the Jews revered as the most ideal person, as an example.
When David was fleeing from Saul, he came to Ahimelech, the priest in the land of Nob, and presented the historical fact that David and his servants ate the showbread on the Sabbath, which only the priests could eat.
㉯In some ways, even after committing a sin that could be killed instantly, David was appointed by God to become the great king of Israel, so no one could condemn his deeds.
② Then, Jesus gave a more fundamental example of what the priests were doing.
(Leviticus 24:5-8)
㉯The priests sacrificed the sheep, skinned them, and burned them for the Sabbath burnt offering. that worked.
③ The law allowed these special people to work on the Sabbath, and this was recognized as an extraneous matter of the Sabbath ordinance.
④So, these illustrations of Jesus// God's law are for the life of man and the glory of God, revealing in the spirit of the law.
2) You must know the true meaning of the Sabbath.
① The Pharisees arbitrarily interpreted and taught the various commandments of the Ten Commandments.
② Jesus gave a stricter interpretation of this through the Sermon on the Mount.
③ However, the Pharisees treated only the Sabbath commandment very strictly.
④They made 39 rules to keep the Sabbath and made it a tradition (tradition) of the elders.
⑤They thought as if humans were there to keep the Sabbath.
The Sabbath is for man// because Jesus, who is both God and true man, is the Lord of the Sabbath.
