spirit of the ten commandments
Jesus said, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment, and the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-38).
The Ten Commandments are the ten commandments that God divides into 10 principles that humans must follow through Moses. Some people say that the Ten Commandments in the Old Testament have any meaning today, but when Jesus asked the rich young man to keep the commandments, he said that I did not come to abolish the law, but to make it perfect. In other words, the spirit of the Ten Commandments is the heart of God and He is You. The Ten Commandments are divided into the commandments about God (1st through 4th commandment) and the commandments about man (5th through 10th commandment). To summarize the Ten Commandments, it is to love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.... Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:36-41) The basic spirit of the Ten Commandments is love, and it can be divided into love for God and love for man.
By examining the spirit of the Ten Commandments, I pray in the name of Jesus that you will live a life of standard of living and complete walk with God.
1. Commandments to God
[First Commandment] Thou shalt not have any other gods before me.
This means that nothing else can sit in God's place. God created the heavens and the earth and created humans. Therefore, nothing can replace the absolute God. From him comes life, and by him life is preserved, and through him all things exist. Everything that replaces him is a false god and idol. Mankind regards science and technology as God and tries to serve and worship them, but there is only one creator, God.
[Second Commandment] You shall not make an idol, and you shall not bow down to it.
This means that everything that sits in the seat of God is an idol. Idolatry refers to replacing the relative with the absolute, the incidental with the essential, and the ultimate of all things that are not. Jesus warned against serving mammon instead of God. To lay up riches on earth is to darken the eyes, which are the lamps of the body, and to serve them as gods (Matthew 6:19-25).
[Third Commandment] Thou shalt not take the name of God in vain
This means that we must not disrespect the name of God, and it forbids all kinds of injustices committed in the name of God. The Lord's Prayer says that God's name should be sanctified. If his conduct as a child of God is not right, he will dishonor God's name. Jesus said, let your light shine before men, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16). This is what sanctifies the name of God.
[Fourth Commandment] Remember the sabbath day to keep it holy.
This commandment presupposes that you labored in all your works in six days (Exodus 20:9). Therefore, this commandment means that rest should be given to those who work. Work is misunderstood as the curse of God upon Adam, but Jesus taught that work is not a curse but a human duty by saying, My Father has worked until now, and I work (John 5:17). This commandment allows man to be released from work and find rest after working hard, to look to God, the source of life, to find new strength, and to take care of his family.
2. Commandments to Man
[5th Commandment] Honor your father and mother
[Sixth Commandment] Thou shalt not murder
Murder means destroying human life, dignity and rights. Jesus said, "Everyone who is angry with his brother will be judged, whoever calls his brother a racism will be held in a council, and whoever calls a fool will be thrown into hellfire (Matthew 5:22). Contempt is said to be equal to murder. In short, any act that degrades human dignity and worth is prohibited.
[Seventh Commandment] Thou shalt not commit adultery.
This is saying that sex should not be viewed as a joke. God originally made humans male and female and left their parents and made them become one flesh (Matthew 10:6). In the Bible, the relationship between husband and wife is not limited to a biological one, but extends to a spiritual one. Adultery is the destruction of the family and the devaluation of human values as animalistic. A man and a woman have a complementary relationship as helpers (Genesis 2:18), no one sex is superior to the other. Therefore, sexism cannot be tolerated, and each sex should be able to display its own characteristics to the fullest.
[8th Commandment] Thou shalt not steal
This commandment tells us to exercise ownership according to God's will, since everything belongs to God. Everyone has a part to manage as a steward. Stealing is refusing God's entrustment and breaking the order. God has entrusted man to fill the earth, subdue it, and rule over all living things. Therefore, as stewards, human beings are responsible for the fair distribution of the resources entrusted to them to enrich their lives according to God's creation order. Jesus is a faithful and wise servant, who will be in charge of his master and give him food at the proper time? Blessed is that servant when he comes and sees him do this (Matthew 24:45-46). A servant here refers to all who have a responsibility, and this commandment speaks of the importance of the proper distribution of finite resources. But if the evil servant thinks in his heart that his master will be late, and he beats his companions and eats and drinks with drunkards, then the master of that servant will come on an unexpected day and at an hour he does not know, and will strike him severely and punish the hypocrites. .. (Matthew 24: 48-51) Because not apportioning properly at the right time is theft.
[Ninth Commandment] Thou shalt not bear false witness.
Instead of lying, I'm telling you to be honest and sincere. All humans make many mistakes in their words (James 3:2), so if you do not control your tongue well, your entire body will become defiled and even the wheel of life will be burned (James 3:1-12). What this commandment means is to be interpreted as forbidding with a curse word along with a lie. Because it is not right to curse humans who are made in God's image.
[10th Commandment] Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor.
This is to forbid any covetousness. Jesus, beware and resist all covetousness. A man's life does not consist in the abundance of what he has (Luke 12:15). A precious human life is irrespective of how much or how little it possesses. Covetousness is idolatry, a heart that values anything other than God more than God (Colossians 2:5). Covetousness is the cause of breaking all the commandments listed in the Ten Commandments.
