Title: The Spirit of Truth Leads
John 16:7-15 The Spirit of truth leads.
Subject: 24. Holy Spirit 2008.2. 17.
◎ Introduction
: Tells about the work of the Holy Spirit (Who is the Holy Spirit, John 14:15-26)
1. Helping believers (7)
2. Rebuke and enlighten the world (8-11)
3. Guiding the believers (12-13)
4. Glorifying Jesus (14-15)
1. The Holy Spirit helps believers (7)
※ “It is to your advantage that I go away.” If he did not go away, the Holy Spirit would not have come.
※ Some people shout and demand the presence of Jesus or any visible signs, visions, or dreams.
But Jesus says that the coming of the Holy Spirit is more beneficial to those who believe. Why?
1) Now we have the glorified and exalted Lord.
※ He fulfills all promises and satisfies our need for abundant and eternal life (Ephesians 1:19-20)
2) Now we have one mediator before the throne of God (Hebrews 4:14~16).
3) Now we have the presence of the Holy Spirit who is always with us (John 14:16)
4) Now we have the true gospel to proclaim.
※ It is the gospel of the risen and exalted Lord who gives eternal life to all who believe.
5) Now we have the worldwide work of the Holy Spirit. (The Comforter = John 14:16)
① Rebuke and enlighten (John 16:8~10,13) ② Help and guide those who believe (John 16:12~13)
③ Glorifying Christ (John 16:14~15)
2. Rebuke and enlighten (8~11)
※ Rebuke: Pointing out that you have done something wrong or that you have not done anything right.
Enlightenment: It means tapping and moving the person's heart until you know that the fact is true.
1) rebuke for sin (9)
① He rebukes the sins of the world, and points out the fact that humans have sin.
* Missing the sign - We fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23)
* Deviation - to deviate from the way (Ephesians 2:1)
* Transgression - breaking God's law (Hebrews 2:2~3)
② He makes the world realize that human unbelief is wrong.
* It reminds us that only when we believe in Jesus can we truly be forgiven (1 John 2:1~2).
2) Rebuke for righteousness (10)
① Humans have no righteousness acceptable to God.
* Human righteousness is inadequate and insufficient (only self-righteous righteousness, human righteousness, humanistic action righteousness, human goodness righteousness) and unacceptable to God. (Ga 3:11, Isa 64:6-7)
② The Holy Spirit makes the world realize that Jesus is the only righteousness acceptable to God.
* Because Jesus was righteous, he was received by the Father into heaven.
* Jesus obtained righteousness for all.
* You can come to God through the righteousness of Jesus. (Pray in Jesus name)
* Jesus is a perfect man, and he is the Son of Man. (John 1:51, 2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 4:24-25)
3) rebuke of judgment (11)
① He rebukes the world for the coming of the day of judgment (Romans 14:12, Hebrews 9:27)
* Man has both obligations and responsibilities to God and man.
* Sometime in the future, man will stand face to face with God and will be judged.
* At that time, people will be judged according to what they have done and what they have not done.
② It reminds us that Jesus bore the judgment of sin and death for mankind.
* He died to bear sin, judgment, and punishment for mankind. (1 Peter 2:24, 3:18)
* By dying, he broke Satan's authority over sin and death. (John 12:31, Hebrews 2:14-15)
* Now, not only can man be freed from sin and death, but his sins are forgiven and the death of Jesus
through which eternal life has been obtained. (John 3:16, Ephesians 1:7)
3. The Holy Spirit guides believers (12-13)
※ The Holy Spirit guides us through three ministries.
1) The Holy Spirit leads by speaking the truth. (12)
“You are not able to bear it now” (Government: handle, grasp) - It means that you will tell me later through the Holy Spirit.
※ Christ speaks about the words of the Holy Spirit and how He will guide those who believe.
Know by experience (Hebrews 4:15-16)
※ Jesus is the one ordained by God to reveal the work of the Holy Spirit
* Our joy and trust - because the Lord already knows by experience what we face.
(Rom 8:14, Psalm 23:2, 48:14, 73:24, Isaiah 30:21, 42:16, 48:17)
2) The Holy Spirit guides us by guiding us into all truth (13)
※ It is called “the Spirit of truth”. The truth is Jesus Christ Himself (John 14:6, 15:26-27, John 15:16, 1 John 4:6)
3) The Holy Spirit guides us by showing (announcing, speaking) things to come (13)
※ After the resurrection of Jesus, the one who showed (speaks and makes known) the things revealed in the Word in the hearts of those who believe
It is the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9~10, 12)
