Title: The Traveler's Sorrow (Genesis 23:1)
Description: Abraham's companion Sarah passed away at the age of 127. Abraham's sorrow was extreme. Although she went through many crises during her wandering life and made human mistakes afterward due to hand problems, Sarah was a good companion to Abraham. After living a life of faith and obedience for the rest of his life, he finally left for an eternal resting place.
It is said that Sarah died at the age of 127, but she is the only one who recorded her age in the Bible. It is a special treat. For all men, the death of a spouse is shocking and sad, but especially Abraham did (2). You can see them mourning and mourning, trying to save the cemetery from the Hittites. He introduces himself to the Hittites as 'soldiers and sojourners'.
In fact, the land of Canaan was promised to Abraham by God as an inheritance, but he called himself a stranger because that promise had not yet been fulfilled. However, the more fundamental cause was Sarah's death, and Abraham realized that life was a stranger. Rather than earthly Canaan, I am a sojourner who lives by looking at the heavenly Canaan that will never disappear. This earth is a place to live for a while.
Abraham negotiated to buy burials from the Hittites. The Hittites paid the greatest homage to Abraham. I tried to pay homage and provide all the comforts by saying that I looked like a 'prince of God' But Abraham paid a fair price and purchased the field of Eblon at Machpelah in Mamre, where he was buried and buried. Although the land of Canaan was a land promised by God as an inheritance, the land that Abraham actually secured was a very small amount of cemetery and surrounding fields. It was also Abraham's response to God's covenant.
Holy Life ───────────────────────────
The writer of Hebrews quoted the expression that Abraham referred to himself as a stranger and a foreigner as it was, and said that this represented the 'seeking home' of life (Hebrews 11:13-14). We live in a world where the number of believers who are deceived by the world's vain desires and fall or even destroy families is rapidly increasing.
Today’s Prayer ──────────────────────────
1. Let us cast away our vain desires in a world like a stranger.
2. Today, as I have the hardships of life like a stranger, I come to God's temple and receive comfort.
