Title: The Woman in Adultery / John 8:1
Subject: The Woman in Adultery / John 8:1-
It was while Jesus was teaching in the temple.
1. Those who lay a snare to overthrow others
When the scribes and Pharisees who tried to arrest Jesus Christ failed in their work (chapter 7), they now use other methods. They arrest the woman who committed adultery before Jesus and try to put Jesus Christ in a corner.
Although it is more appropriate to take the unclean woman to the priest or judge, they are trying to trap Jesus Christ by doing the work of bringing the unclean woman to their most cherished temple.
Their appearance of arresting an adulterous woman at the scene contained just as much immoral disrespect and cruelty as the adulterous woman, and it gave shame and suffering as if a woman's life was dismantled in a public service. They are doing this just to get Jesus Christ in trouble, to protect their position.
1) They tried to put Jesus Christ in the dilemma.
John 8:5 Moses commanded in the law to stone these women, but what can you say?
Leviticus 20:10 Whoever commits adultery with another man's wife, whoever commits adultery with his neighbor's wife, must put to death the adulterer and the adulteress.
If you ask her to be released from adultery, you are breaking the law, and if you ask her to be put to death, it is indeed a violation of the Roman positive law, which required permission from the governor when executing the execution (18:31)
He brought a difficult problem to Jesus Christ.
2) It is a futile use of knowledge.
Those who use their knowledge to overthrow others.
John 8:6 They said this because they were testing Jesus to obtain a condition for accusation.
Their familiarity with the law of Moses was rather their snare.
3) Those who try to knock others down themselves fall.
Psalm 7:15 He dug a cistern, and fell into the trap I made.
Psalm 7:16 Their wreckage will return on their heads, and their violence will come down on their heads.
Psalm 9:15 The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they hid.
2. The Word of Jesus
1) Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground (6)
Jesus is calling their attention by writing on the floor.
It is not clear why he wrote on the ground. What is clear is that in that harsh atmosphere, Jesus wrote the following. (***The Way of the Way)
We do not know exactly what Jesus wrote. He does not speak directly, but writes on the floor, leaving a brief interval with the excited and reminded scribes and Pharisees.
2) He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at him (7)
[First] means to be a witness against that sin, and to be the ruler of the act of stoning. It is also asking, can you take responsibility for its enforcement?
Obviously, no one among the religious leaders and the crowd would have committed adultery like a woman caught in adultery. However, they themselves had forgotten that no one is without sin.
Romans 3:10 As it is written, there is none righteous, not even one.
This also reminds me of Matthew 7:1-5.
Matthew 7:1 Do not judge, lest you be judged.
Matthew 7:2 With the judgment with which you judge, you will be judged, and with the measure with which you measure it it will be measured to you.
Matthew 7:3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye and do not understand the log that is in your own eye?
can't you
Matthew 7:4 Behold, there is a log in your eye, why do you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye?
Matthew 7:5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly and remove the speck from your brother's eye.
3) He bent down again and wrote on the ground with his finger (8).
He gives repentance and an opportunity to escape.
Matthew 5:27 And you have heard that it was said, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Matthew 5:28 I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully
already committed adultery
3. People returning (9)
1) When we heard these words, we felt remorse
Jesus' point is very practical.
Matthew 7:3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye and do not understand the log that is in your own eye?
can't you
Matthew 7:4 Behold, there is a log in your eye. Why is it that you say to your brother, I
Do you want me to take the speck out of your eye?
Matthew 7:5 You hypocrite, first remove the log from your eye, and then you will see clearly and remove the speck from your brother's eye.
2) Start as an adult and go out one by one to the young
Remember that adults are better than children
3) Only Jesus and the woman standing in the midst were left.
When they all returned, this woman stood alone before Jesus Christ, the Son of God, God.
4. Jesus’ Forgiveness and Rebuke
1) Jesus got up and saw that there was no one but a woman.
2) Woman, where are those who accused you? Has no one condemned you?
3) He answered, “No, Lord.” (11)
4) Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more."
said)
①Neither do I condemn you.
To not condemn means not to [condemn], which means that Jesus will forgive all our sins through the cross that He bears.
Romans 8:1 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:34 Who can condemn? It is Christ who died, not only that he was raised, but Jesus, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us.
* It was not the Lord's job to condemn mankind, all sinners, but it was the Lord's job to save them.
John 3:17 God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
② Go and sin no more
Jesus is not thinking about the future, not burying the sins of the past and passing on them, nor dwelling on the sins of the past.
Now, he is speaking forward-looking, telling us to free ourselves from sin and never commit such a sin again.
**** conclusion ****
1. Do not set a snare in front of others. In that snare I fall.
2. Let's respond wisely
Matthew 10:16 Behold, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves.
Therefore, be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
3. Not only forgiveness, but also correcting the wrongdoing.
