Sermons for Preaching

Title: There Is A Shelter/Psalm 9:9

There is a refuge / Psalm 9:9

Key Verse: “The Lord is also a stronghold of the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.”

Word: After David's victory in the battle with Goliath alone, verses 1-6 are the contents of praising the Lord with all his heart, and verses 7-12 are exhortations to praise the Lord while thinking 'Who is God?' are the words of

1. Invitation to praise (verse 11)

Verse 11 says, “Praise the Lord who dwells in Zion, and proclaim his deeds among the people.” Here, ‘Zion’ refers to a symbolic church, and because you have met God who works through the church, you are urged to go to the place of praise together with yourself. Therefore, the wonders of the Lord must not be known alone, but must be proclaimed among the people. David was an evangelist who invited others to the place of grace he received.

2. Introduction of God (verses 7-10)

He introduces God to people like this. First, as in verse 7, “The Lord sits forever,” He is not a helpless person who sits down because of sore legs and tiredness, but is the eternal Ruler. Second, in verse 8 it says, “He will judge the world with righteousness; He will judge the peoples with uprightness.” God judges, not like an unjust judge, but with justice and honesty. Third, verse 9 says, “A stronghold of the oppressed and a stronghold in times of trouble.” In this world, even God's people face oppression and tribulation by the wicked. But we have a shelter and a strong fortress. He is God. Fourth, verse 10 says, “For you do not forsake those who seek you.” He is a God who comforts and does not forsake those who seek Him.

3. Best knowledge

We live our lives in search of needs. Those who know this need rightly are wise and possess true knowledge. What is true knowledge for us? It is the knowledge of the name of the Lord. To know the Lord is to “trust in the Lord.” Living trusting in the Lord is the best knowledge, the best principle of life, and the best comfort. This is because God does not forget the cry and circumstances of His people.

Prayer: The Lord knows our circumstances! That fact excites us. Give us the courage to share this thrill with our unbelieving family and friends! I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
